I mean I'd be down with trading them WITH retention and picking up prospects and draft picks. And then resign them in 3 years when we are ready to compete again and their contracts are over.

Even with a couple million retention there aren't many teams that are a Kane or Toews away from cup contention that could afford the 8-9 million price tag - any of those teams have their own Toews or Kane already

I feel like Kane would be a great player to trade with 50% retention (I know the owners won't want that) but the return would be huge and help quickly allow us to rebuild and then by the time we are ready to compete, we just resign him which I'm sure he'd be down with.

So if you have Matthews for three years at his cap hit (I know it’s 4 years but if it were 3 years) and he isn’t going to resign then what makes Kane’s contract less valuable.
