Take out Niku and upgrade the pick to a second and then sign a UFA D. Chara would be an incredible add.

Nah, if this trade would happen, stick with the 3rd and Niku, 24years old, can play RHD and LHD. Pens 3rd pairing next year can be PO.Joseph and Niku. With J.Riikoli as depth 7th D.

The only issue I have with this deal is expansion draft. We can only protect 7 forwards, and Roslovic would be the 8th one I think needs to be protected: Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel, Zucker, Rust, Kapanen, McCann and now Roslovic. You would probably lose one, so it doesnt make all that much sense in my eyes.

I see both sides here. The main question is will Niku become anything? Or will he be a bust? He is 2 years from UFA status so idk.

Exactly. I`d rather go with the sure thing veteran option. Pens have plenty of Nikus developing in system.

McCann, Blueger and Z.A.R are all RFA and protected. The only way they will be available and unprotected is if we give them a QO b4 the draft. U need 2 Forwards and 1 D and 1 goalie available for the draft. So it’s gonna be B.Tanev. Gonna be 30 years old after this year and a 4th line energy guy making 3.5M a year. And we will probably QO either Blueger or ZAR to be available too. We don’t have to protect McCann, he a RFA after this(unless, like I said, we QO him b4 the draft).

And Matheson will be available. If he scores 10-14 goals and has 15-18 assists and 25-34 points or more. Which he is capable of. He has shown it b4. He’s is an offensive defensemen. They will draft him then. At 26 years old and they have a cap minimum they have to reach. And a top 4, offensive D, at 26 years old, the cap hit and term isn’t bad for a expansion team. Not a ton of good, young, offensive, D are gonna be unprotected. So I hope he preformes this year and they take him or Tanev.

But ya, McCann, Blueger, ZAR are protected as RFA unless we QO them b4 the draft. Which we will have to do for 1. Or if we trade for another forward that isn’t an upcoming FA, at the deadline

Thats not how the expansion draft works.. You need 2 forwards, 1 defenseman and 1 goalie exposed that are UNDER CONTRACT for the 2021-22 season. If you have RFAs that have played 3+ seasons and they are unprotected, Seattle can take them. The reason the league requires you to expose a minimum amount of players under contract is because Seattle must take at least 20 players who are under contract for the 2021-22 season. They could still take the RFAs, so in this case, you would likely be losing McCann or Roslovic, depending on who you decide to protect.

I don’t think so man. The only RFA’s that are unprotected and available in an expansion drafts are goalies. Not Fowards or D. Unless, like I said, you give them a Qualifying offer before the draft. RFA are unavailable and protected, I think.

Yes you have to have 2 forwards, 1D, that have played 3 or more seasons, and 1 Goalie(that can be a a RFA, But has to have a QO by the draft or they are ineligible and protected). I said that already in my last post.

How can they draft a player though, especially that is arbitration eligible, when you don’t know what their contract is or if they are gonna sign with you. Would the “match rights”, and “draft pick compensation rights”, and his arbitration hearing rights, then move to Seattle with the player?? B/c that would be a problem w/ the players union and the CBA if not. And even if they do, I still see that being a problem with the players union.
