Three way trade with Tampa and Ottawa

Created by: The_Rocket

Description
Looking at what the staal trade to Detroit, his $5.7 million cap was worth a 2nd.

Eriksson is a Simla cap hit, but an extra year. I think 2 2nds plus a prospect is fair, but if something else needs to be added that could be negotiated.

Tampa trades 1 2nd to dump 4 years of Johnson

Ottawa would want a 1st minimum to take on Eriksson's contract.

I wouldn't want Tyler Johnson without retention either as Vancouver. They could have just signed Toffoli instead for cheaper...

Interesting idea. I think since both teams are in a bind Ottawa could squeeze a fair bit more. I like the idea though, neat. Works for Johnson too, gets to play for a playoff hopeful. You still have a couple contracts to bury too, could save a bit more if needed.

That's not a 3-way, It's basically 2 separate trades. Tampa is dumping Johnson for nothing and Vancouver is dumping Eriksson dumping Eriksson for nothing.

If they couldn't have signed Toffoli and rid themselves of Eriksson's deal how would they take on Johnson's higher cap hit?

Rocket is saying they would have had to trade Eriksson before signing Toffoli. Not entirely; I think you can be 10% above the cap until the season starts.

I like this. Proposed something very similar a few days back.

I think Dorion would be remiss to stay stuck on a first round pick. The Canucks aren't going to do it, and Dorion would be passing on the opportunity to get one or two really good "B" prospects that can compete for a roster spot now.

Eriksson is only due 5 million more on his contract. So Ottawa would get a veteran bottom six penalty killer for an average of 2.5 M per year. They aren't spending to the cap anyways, so taking on the 6M cap hit means nothing to them. A first round pick is an over payment. The Canucks can buy him out next year, save 2M in the first year and 5 million the next.

I see something more like:

TB - 2021 2nd rnd pick (CLBS) from Ottawa

Van - Tyler Johnson

Ott - Tayler Raddish, Kole Lind, Louie Eriksson, 2021 3rd rnd pick (VAN)

Basically what I'm saying is that Ottawa doesn't take that trade.

Benning was asking Toffoli to wait to see if the Canucks could clear space. Toffoli wasn't willing to wait. Maybe if he did, today they buy our Sutter and sign Toffoli...

Do you have a source about telling him to wait?

From my understanding Benning told him they didn't have the cap space and never asked him to wait.

Ottawa holds ALL THE CARDS on an Eriksson deal. I also believe they decline the Raddysh + Lind offer listed above.
Neither of those prospects are taking a top 9 spot away from Dadonov, C. Brown or Batherson.

Both trades in the OP would happen at the exact time, which is why it’s a 3-way trade.

TBL gives up Johnson and a 2nd; receives nothing.

Van gives up Eriksson, a prospect (in this case Lockwood), and a 2nd; receives Johnson.

OTT gives up nothing, receives Eriksson, Van 2nd, TBL 2nd, and a prospect.

If Any team declines, then no moves happen, obviously.

For those saying Van should just dump Eriksson themselves and should have signed toffoli; here’s the difference:

Part of the payment for dumping Eriksson is paid by TBL in this AGM, which is a 2nd rounder. If Van tried to do this dump without involving Tampa, it would cost them an extra 2nd to do so. On top of that, Toffoli would have cost a 4th round pick to re-sign as part of the conditions on the LA trade to acquire him.

So this trade dumps Eriksson and replaces toffoli for the cost of a 2nd and a prospect, whereas dumping Erkiksson and keeping toffoli Would have been TWO 2nds, a prospect, and a 4th

teams who are contending or beginning to be contenders are going to have to make a very serious and difficult decision, is cap space more important than picks/expendable prospects, TBL 1st and 2nds will be in the 25+ range most likely, NO team is going to take any of TJ, Killorn, McDonaugh, without TBL overpaying, Gourde would cost TBL the least to move but he is also better than the other 3 players, ALL have NTC and ALL refused to waive it. Tampa will most likely have to move either sergy or Cirelli with one of the other players to make room to pay for cernak and who ever is left, they cannot afford to keep all 3 and 3/4 of NHLs are within 12m of the cap with players still to sign. Also teams must prepare for the cap to possibly go down next year or continue to stay flat.
