The NHL needs to continue the 20 (or 24) team playoff format so loser teams like the Sabres, Sens, Ducks, Wings, Cats, Devils, Oilers, Kings don't have to go one decade in-between playoff appearances.
Wired: Sabres made the right financial decision so they can build a competitive team now and use opened cap(Okposo,Hutton,Staal,Hall, etc.) to extend him in a better position next year.

If they signed Reinhart long-term it probably means they couldn't afford to sign Hall and all their RFA's. They have even more cap opening next off-season and can simply extend him next off-season longterm.
If they have the money this season and next offseason as you say then why not a long term deal? Your reasoning makes little sense.
Either way it’s a good aav for a good pkayer and important position to the sabres. Hopefully next season they can ink him to a long term deal.

If they extended him long-term it probably means Hall is priced out. Reinhart would've eaten up $2-3M more on a long term deal and with the other RFA's it's a backbreaker when trying to add Hall at $8M.

Victor Olofsson, Linus Ullmark, Casey Mittelstadt.
Yes... and they have 9m in space. Let’s give reinhart an extra 2m you now have 7.15m, Mitts is due a lower cap hit, but even if you put him in at 1m. Bridge olofsson 3m x 2 sign ulmark for 3m or less. Trim the roster down to 21 and you should have nearly 1m left over.
no time like the present to lock in an important piece like rileinhart.

No. Most of the teams you mentioned miss the playoffs because of their own failure to put a good team on the ice or fail to properly rebuild. It's on them. Not the NHL

Sounds like Ullmark and Olofsson want their bags so idk
Very Good move because it gives him a chance to let the numbers play out. Sabres don't get locked into anything crazy and he gets to prove his numbers.
My point is he is not worth 7M right now. 6M long term max. He hasn't done anything to make more than that.
He's driven play on a trash team. Points will follow if you're not accompanied by Rasmus Ristolainen, Kyle Okposo and Casey Mittelstadt on the ice. I think 6.75 x 6-7 would be super fair.

I don't buy it, but he signed a one year deal for a reason. If he can't get more points next year then he should not be given more than 6M.

The problem with your reasoning is that you would think he was worth 8+ million if he played on Tampas first line. There are way more sophisticated methods of evaluating player skill than point totals.
