Helping Vancouver Not Eriksson and trying to get Sergachev

Created by: PeterK
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 26, 2020
Published: Oct. 26, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If Ferland can play Staal and Neilson can be buried for enough cap room. Lots of depth, some veteran presence (that they mostly had already). A couple more picks and lots of trade fodder at the deadline for more picks. The depth will help insulate and keep the younger guys in the minors (if we have minors this year). Of course trading for Serg being the big one, matches perfectly with their timeline. Might have to give up something else, maybe retain on Helm to give Tampa something for the here and now but I think if Tampa gets stuck that is the player to get even if you have to pay a bunch for him.

Trades
1.
DET
  1. Beagle, Jay
  2. Ferland, Micheal
  3. 2021 2nd round pick (VAN)
  4. 2021 5th round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Vancouver clears cap room for this and next year without sacrificing integral parts. They get back either Filppula or Helm that can play a degitimate depth role, replacing Beagle.
VAN
  1. Filppula, Valtteri
Additional Details:
Detroit gets a chance at Ferland returning to form without putting pressure on him to return asap. Also picks.
2.
DET
  1. Johnson, Tyler
  2. Sergachev, Mikhail [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Picks could be included, but I think this is a deal that Detroit would like and Tampa could be ok with considering they could then sign Cirelli and Cernak and they still have two all stars in Hedman and McDonough.
TBL
  1. Merrill, Jon
  2. Svechnikov, Evgeny
Additional Details:
Svechnikov might be solid but not a star, might be enough so at least Tampa can say they got something decent. Merril and maybe a retained Helm or Glendening for depth to replace Johnson.

Ferland is never playing again, so basically your giving us a ltir and a 4th liner and 2nd for flip? I don't see how this trade makes much sense for Vancouver and filppula has to waive his ntc. Don't see it happening.

To take Tyler johnson it's going to be a high pick and high prospect, if your offering serg, it's getting pretty close to having to accept it. Maybe wings can just buy out tj and then it works

The idea is that Vancouver needs space next year. If they feel they won't have enough, which I don't think they will, this gives them some 3M at least, 6.5M at most, for a 2nd, I think that makes a lot of sense for them. And if it isn't Filppula, make it Glendening or Helm. All Three centers are not required for Detroit. Helm I'd prefer to keep but ultimately I think as long as you keep one, hopefully a good locker room presence guy, that is all you need as Detroit.

He is falling off and he still has 4 years left at 5M. Yes, it will cost a lot to take him. I think he makes sense for Detroit, they have space enough for 2 years at least and he is still NHL caliber.

Like I said in the trade notes, it might take picks as well. As long as it isn't a 1st rounder I think it'd be worth it. Tampa will ask for a ton and they should. Also, I think I mentioned, pretty much whatever you have to give up to get him is fine. I think having those two players from Tampa is a perfect fit in Detroit. The players would be willing to go play for Yzerman I'd hope and Tampa is in a bind so squeeze them.

Also Serg may be a top LHD but he isn't Hedman, Josi, Karlsson, Carlson caliber. He might be, probably will be in a few years but not yet which means it isn't a guarantee.
