next year outlook after midseason trade

Created by: Mattkenn
Team: 2021-22 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 27, 2020
Published: Oct. 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Gaudreau is exactly the type of player we are hoping Cole Caufield becomes.. but with a left shot. Which is what we want.

Calgary on the other hand, wants a right shot sniper to pair with Tkachuk and Monahan.

If cgy don't start the season lights out, I can see them trying to trade Gaudreau to retool. This would be a good scenario for them.

Gaudreau is the anti-Bergevin type player. I give this trade a <1% probability - also makes no sense given that Gaudreau goes UFA. Why would we give up Caufield for that.

You're fired!

hard pass on Gaudreau. For a team that's now up against the cap, I'd rather have 3 years of Caufield on his ELC and his 4 RFA years after that.
Also, Habs are not lacking in LH shot players as you claim:
KK, Drouin, Tatar, Lehkonen, Romanov manning the point on the PP as a LHD as well longer term...

Gaudreau is the exact player we are hoping Caufield becomes... but as a left hand shot which is better suited for our lineup.

As this outlook is set in 2021, this would give Montreal 2 offseason to extend Gaudreau.

Tatar is not sticking around... so we will be missing a top 6 LW... I'd rather have Gaudreau in that spot than Caufield on his off wing.

This exercise is to show that this trade is viable capwise.

they're very different players. gaudreau is more of a play maker, while caufield is a goal scorer. habs don't need play makers. they need goal scorers.

Definitely viable capwise, but no Habs GM would ever think that's in the best interest of our team short, medium, or long term.

Also, it's entirely possible that Caufield projects better as a LW than a RW given how elite his shot is. Quicker release time for him from the left than on the right. Or someone like Toffoli could also play from the left. There is literally zero urgency for the team to bring in an additional left hand shot given the players that we already have.

totallly agree with this. he's not a player that will fit in the habs line up. we have enough small wingers.

Gaudreau in 30 career playoff games:

3 even strength goals.
3 even strength assists.
6 even strength points.
-8.

Hard no.
