Is this team genuinely better than last year

Created by: Couvy
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 27, 2020
Published: Oct. 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Not criticizing, just want to hear opinions from leafs fans out there, or anyone who cheers for another team who has an opinion. Not really looking for a lineup discussion at this point, as we can go all day arguing over who should be in and out of the lineup, thanks!

Team on paper is easily better, on the ice we'll have to wait and see

In the regular season, they're a top 8 team, but come playoff time, I don't think they make it far. they're going to get bullied out like they did against Cbj. they have lost depth scoring with kapenen and johnssen. those are 2 goal scorers that can score almost 20, and they haven't been replaced.

Probably too early to tell.

First off, where is Jimmy Vesey?

My questions would be:

- does Brodie stabilize the right side of the defense?
- do simmonds and thornton have anything left?
- is anderson going to be a .923 svp goalie or .913
- can robertson/mikheyev put up the 60-80 points johnsson/kapanen did.

As a Habs fan, there is no better way to put it.

Easily much more ambitious and purposeful moves by Dubas this year. This could really be the difference.

BUUUUUUT if I was a Leaf fan I would still feel slightly unsatisfied, the moves made didn't make a statement defensively which I feel one big(ish - I understand the cap situation) splash for a defenceman IN ADDITION to Brodie or for a solid defensive forwards. That is just my greed speaking though.

Yes. On paper it is better but generally the group itself is not the exact same player with different country of origin, but there are all elements which makes the team more complete overall

Completely 100% disagree with this. They will not be as good in the regular season. But once playoff time rolls around they are much tougher and grittier and added the necessary experience that I think at least gets them by one round (finally).

not at all lol. they're going to get run over. they have no toughness in the top 6. all the opposing teams have to do is run down their top 6. defense is just above average but much more stable. we saw tampa and dallas in the playoffs. you need skill on your top lines, but you also need toughness. Matthews doesn't use his body enough, but besides him, the top 6 is gonna be extremely beat up.

Yeah but now instead of having a bunch of fancy analaytics goal scorers in the bottoms six they actually have guys who will crash and bang. And the D is tougher too. Adding Bogosian gives some extra grit there. They definitely aren't going to get bullied worse than they have the past 3 seasons. Might get bullied equally as bad but definitely not worse.

oh bottom 6 and the bottom part of the D is fine. its more grit and less offense, which is important. but it won't do them any favors if they play a tampa, isles, habs, caps, etc.

leafs main problem was failure to show up everynight, if they did that with last years team they would have done better, so either way if they show up and play with more urgency and show up on time this year ill think theyre gonna do better than they did last year, the d is definitely better which was the main weakness which i think makes this team better for sure, forwards lost some skill but like the moves they made, they aint gonna beat alot of teams with either roster if they dont show up to games but if i were to say, i would say this team is better based on defence improving alot

Yes. This team is much deeper and has far more options at each position than last year. People seem to forget how bad the backup goaltending was before dubas traded for Campbell. Having dell as the third string is huge - hopefully the leafs don’t lose him to waivers

Yes, they are better.
Out: Johnsson, Kapanen, Barrie, Ceci, Clifford
In: Brodie, Thornton, Simmonds, Vesey, Bogosian

I think the new player fit team need better. I could be wrong, but after missing the playoffs, it won't be hard to improve next season.

I think something being overlooked too when evaluating the moves is the room got a lot better. Huge to have guys like Thornton, Simmonds, and Bogosian in the room to hold guys accountable. Need someone who isn't afraid to yell at the "superstars".

that's pretty ironic coming from a leafs fan... I mean habs have won playoff round, loaded up on all positions and are poised to make a deep run, while the leafs have severe cap issues and not enough grit to get past the first or second round...

Toronto made a bunch of great moves, but it's up to the team to actually execute a good season.

There are no excuses going into next season.

truth be told there shouldnt have been last year, they could have been better, but lack of effort and consistency screwed them harder than lack of grit or defense

Which roster and core would I rather have... Leafs or Habs.... hmmm... tough call... NOT. your best players are 30+ and you're no where near competing. Good luck.
