Solid deal. Wings fan probably would have wanted him long term but this is not bad either.

I wonder why the Red Wings allow it to go all the way to arbitration... They have plenty of money to spend, why didn't they go long term and higher AAV? Like 5 years at 4,5-5M.
Also the arbitration hearings aren't comfortable for both sides.

Well it appears the hearing went much better for the team than for the player. This is pretty close to what the Red Wings were arguing for.

I wonder if it’s a ownership thing trying to limit $$

Red Wings have 15+ million and only need to sign Mantha and Timashov I think they are fine.

My thoughts exactly. We have like 3.5 forwards that are producing and plenty of cap space. Unless the cash isnt there, just pay the man.

So did I get this right. He gets 3.5M and is 26 when this contract ends next year ( and still an RFA ). Next "summer" they possible need to go through this again for an max 1 year arbitration deal, from which after he is full UFA?

Am kind of thinking if they go to that he is gone for good. Detroit had the capspace. Why not go for atleast 5 year x 5M or? Buy some of those UFA years off.

Solid deal but I easily would have just paid him his asking price long term. 4.25 million is really reasonable considering he was on pace for 55 points this year.

I’m not a wings fan so I could be wrong and I’m just speculating here but I could see bertuzzi being traded at TDL to a contender and leaving Detroit (not saying the relationships gone sour or anything). Just see something there

Great deal probably could’ve made more but arbitration, next year he’ll make north of 4 mil. Great player, great contract

I'm guessing they went to arbitration to get a second buyout window. Maybe they want to buyout Frans Nielsen?

One more question.

Arbitration awards can only be 1 or 2 years in length [CBA 12.10(a)&(b)]The party (Player or Club) who did not elect for Arbitration decides on the awarded term [CBA 12.10(a)&(b)]

Detroit had the option of getting this as a 2 year deal, right? For 3.5M/annual.

Do they think they will get second arbitration lower? Does expiring contract make better/worse value if they trade him at deadline?
Is it 1 year just so they can try for a real contract after this expires, and want to negotiate while he is still RFA?

Honestly if I were Tyler I would just file arbitration next year no matter what if the stats are anywhere near last seasons.

Just comparing to Josh Anderson and 7x 5.5M. Thinking the players are pretty equal. Would even give edge to Bertuzzi

to the people who say 20 goal scores don't make 3.5

Good fair deal for player and team

I’m actually a little confused about that, are you only aloud to buyout one player during each window? If not, then why not buy out Neilsen a month ago

The first window closed before free agency opened and signing Namestnikov made him expendable
