I’m surprised appleton got more tbh. Harkins was better in almost every way and they are on identical terms. Good deal for both sides though as harkins can play his way into a consistent bottom six player and get paid after. Might even become a middle six option down the road...

appleton kills penalties. harkins was initially scratched in favor of nick shore in the playoffs because he didn't have use on special teams

Harkins wasn't scratched because he didn’t kill penalties. He was scratched because shore was a centre and the jets needed a 4c, not another winger. And harkins did kill penalties of i remember correctly, just not as much as appleton. Still doesn’t explain to me how harkins didn’t get at least as much. He was just simply better. Good deal for both sides though!

Appleton has more experiences in the big league. He won't be more than a 3/4RW.
Harkins is more talented, more skilled and characteristicaly fits more to the top6/middle6. But now, he has to prove he belongs there.

according to hockey reference harkins didnt so much as have one shift on the pk last season, and I recall a maurice interview where he gave the special teams reasoning as to why harkins was scratched, but im sure shore being able to play center played a factor as well.

Appleton is a full time NHLer...has been for a few seasons...Harkins was not. Makes total sense
