NYLANDER TRADE read description

Created by: deys3232
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 23, 2020
Published: Oct. 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
No, I dont think the Leafs should do this, it will hurt them long term

But if they want to go all in and win a cup this year, then this is the move to make

Spurgeon is easily a top 7 (argueably top 5) defenseman in the NHL

Personally, I dont think they should do this because of the gap in age, and the fact that the Spurgeon and Tavares contracts will suck in a few years, leaving the Leafs in cap hell. While Nylander will be on one of the best contracts in the NHL

Ignoring age and contract tho, do you think the value is fair?

Yes I scrathed Simmonds, hes not very good. He can play the occasional game to give Jumbo and Spezza some rest

Minnesota doesn’t do that. They won’t retain for 7 years.

This isn't even considered by Toronto for every reason you said. Age and contract are 2 huge factors in trades. Leafs won't sacrifice that much of the future to try to compete for 1 maybe 2 seasons

In 19-20 Jared Spurgeon (among defensemen) ranked

1st in xWAR
1st in xGAR
1st in xSPAR
8th in xOFF GAR
5th in xDEF GAR
8th in xGA/60 RAPM
22nd in xGF/60 RAPM
27th in CA/60 RAPM
11th in CF/60 RAPM

Easily a top 7 defenseman

But you keep thinking that

That trade is bad. Spurgeon will age far better because of how he plays. Not super physical hitting and taking hits. He’s a position and agility defender. Luckily he can also score and rack up points. I think the last 2 or so years of his contract will be bad, but like suter will prove wildly efficient in his mid 30s.

Toronto adds big time for him. And those picks from mn would drop big time.

I'd do it in a heartbeat, It's really not much to retain on a yearly basis. Spurgeon probably nixes the deal anyways. Besides the Leafs just watched Rielly/Barrie and hated it. Why do it again for more money, term, and a older player?

Because Spurgeon is the 3rd (and if Dumba rebounds 4th) best d-man on the Wild. He's an advanced stats darling, but the on-ice results doesn't match those stats.

Its only 575k, not even league min

And they are getting William Nylander who would easily be their best forward.
While also getting a contract that is a bit too long

looooooooooooooooooooooool

Hes easily the best defenseman on the Wild

Its not even close

And the "analytics are all based on his"on-ice" results
Just because he doesnt have a big name, points or isnt flashy, doesnt mean he isnt good

It’s his opinion bro, come on. I think Eichel is better than Matthews, am I wrong? Maybe, depending on who you ask, but it’s my opinion. He thinks Fiala is better than Nylander, so what?

Yea but you have to at least respect it. I’m not trying to start anything, just thought I’d say my piece. No hate intended towards you or anyone else.

Im not taking it as hate, its just a dicusssion. I dont mind hearing why you think what you think. Im 100% open to it. I just want a reason other than "i saw him play and think hes better"

I agree with you on that. Personally I think they’re similar players whether stats say it or not. Both good skaters, decent shot, etc. I think what separates Nylander from Fiala is his ability to drive his line. What separates Fiala from Nylander is his hockey IQ and his hands. Overall, I think Nylander is the better player, but I think it’s close.

It’s subjective dude. Taht said, i think you will find that under .01% of hockey fans share your opinion that spurgeon is easily a top 7 nhl d man. I think he’s really good though.
