Marner > Ellis.

Ellis doesn't fit the age of the core and Marner could get a much better, younger d-man if Marner was ever moved (newsflash, he won't be though). This just doesn't benefit Toronto at all when they're not really in that big of cap problems as it is

Detroit declines, We're not retaining $4 million on Marner for the next 5 years or so. Plus it would take more then a late 1st and late 2nd round pick in what will be a very weak draft next year.

The $4 million retained on Marner would have to be retained by the Leafs. No team is going to take that as 3rd party for 6 years.
