Here is the true breakdown

Point
Marner >>> Meir
Goals
Marner << Meir
Potential
Marner >>>Meir
Salary
Marner <<<<<<<<< Meir

Marner is a more valuable player and he is a better player but his contract kills the value, thy would we give up our top prospect 2 1st and Meir for him? When we could keep the picks the prospect and Meir and also sign another high quality guy for 5.5-6 mil for the same cap hit as Meir. Now we have two all star quality top 6 forwards and picks and a good prospect Vs. Marner.
If we had a ton of cap space and a lot of strong top 6 players but no star I could see this working but as we stand now this would be a HARD NO!

Lol.. & what you fail to realize is that Meier will soon have a worse contract than Marner. When his deal is up, his qualifying offer is $10M and he's worth no where near that. Meier is worth about what Nylander gets paid. But okay, totally forget that when trying to be bias and trying to break down the trade. Lmao.

Don't speak so fast. Liljegren and Merkley are arguably equal value prospects. Marner is worth substantial more than Meier and the picks don't balance it out enough. & remember that Toronto had Merkley on their "Do Not Draft" list. His attitude hasn't changed much so I doubt they jump to trade for him. They'll keep they'll roster as is and not think about this

Liljegren’s shine has worn off as a top defensive prospect. Merkley’s has not. IMO, They would not be equal value.

Merkley is literally unparalleled in his offensive talent. Lilegren is also a great Dman, but the sharks know what they have in Merkley and have worked with him for years now to improve his defensive woes and prepare him for a top NHL position.

U know Liljegren is average at best as a defender..??That’s his troubles. The defensive side. Good offensive Dman. Soft though too. But yes, I think we agree. Meekley>Liljegren.

Yeah I know but im still taking Merkley. His passes are literally Erik Karlsson prime level good.

And that only matters if you decide to not sign him to a contract exertion before the qualifier, but yes if you HAVE to qualify him he isn’t worth 10 mil..... right now, who knows what he will be worth in 3 years. Now if you sign an extension for say 6 years 7.5-8 mil then the qualifier discussion is moot.

Meier signed his deal the way its set up to ensure him at least a $10M AAV on his next deal. So all this discussion is moot.

If only ONE 1st round pick was involved(and no second from The Leafs). We can all admit, the value wouldn’t be horrible.

Of course, for many reasons, everyone can point out why their team WONT and shouldn’t do it. But IMO T.Meier and Merkley and a SJS 1st round pick(top 10 protected) for Marner, Liljegren would probably be around the value.

And SJS would probably ask Toronto to retain 1.5M-3.5M. So then SJS would be paying 9.4M to 7.4M per year instead of 10.9M. And I could see Toronto retaining 1.9M for another 2nd round pick. So SJS would be paying Marner probably his worth. 9M/year.

No it only ensured him a 10m qualifying offer
He did this to protect himself from
Getting lowballed. if he signs a contract for whatever value 1 mil or 10 mill AAV The Qualifying offer is a dead topic.
The only time it is an issue is if he’s not willing to sign and you have to issue the QO to retain his rights.

Top guys just dont sign qualifying offers. Meier will either be inked to a long term deal, or delt to another team where he signs long term.
