This would be the most moronic thing San Jose could possibly do

Before everyone loses their minds, remember, it's just a thought, not saying this is what they must do. Additional conditions could also be retaining 1.893 salary on Marner or trading Willy instead.

Once again, just a thought, not an idea I'm preaching to the Leafs mgmt team.

Lol yeah in terms of value this is really really far off. Sharks never even consider doing this as it stands.

The issue isnt the cap hit. The issue is the difference between Meier and Marner isnt going to make San Jose any less of a lottery team. Both of those firsts are probably top 10 picks, maybe top 5

This is terrible for the sharks. Yes Marner is better than Meier but hes also much more expensive and fits our game less. Not worth downgrading our prospect and adding a ton of picks for

Agreed. Surely Doug Wilson has learned from his last bust-blockbuster about giving up 1st round picks when you've got some serious question marks on your team already.

After giving Ottawa the third overall pick this year, I don't see SJ trading any more firsts for a long while.

Would one 1st,one 3rd and Sandin be better? Just curious.

Hypothetically, say this trade would be possible; how would you edit the players/picks/prospects involved?

Not really? The problem is the baseline really. Us moving Meier for Marner doesnt make sense unless its cheap. We already are a very top heavy team and taking on another massive contract wont be good for the overall team composition,

Lol. Three 1st round picks..?? What?? And R.Merkley>Liljegren. And Marner isnt that much of an uograde over Meier to warrant three 1st round picks. And they will be early 1st round picks too..lol. This is crazy. And Marner makes 12M compared to Meier 4M..lol.

Yep, that’s a good point. It’s why Crosby only took. 8.5M per year. So they could spend the extra 2.5-3.5M they should be spending on him on the team.

Leafs are spending 41M on 4 players..lol. And 4 forwards..lol. And have to pay the other 16-18 players the same. The other 40.5M b/ween 16-18 players. And the 4 players @ 41M per year, don’t even include a D-man or a goalie..lol

lol - the Marner contract is a dog - his camp is absurd demanding that kind of coin. Most notably his father going on radio, but ultimately the buck stops with Dubeass. Dubeass is going with the barbell strategy of useless minimum contract 2005 all-stars and overpaying the top, while polluting the balance of the roster with mediocrity. Matthews is the only player on this team worth the money. Gallagher just signed a long term deal for less than Nylander, Anderson also.

Leafs need to move one of Tavares or Marner - no questions about that.

Don't speak so fast. Liljegren and Merkley are arguably equal value prospects. Marner is worth substantial more than Meier and the picks don't balance it out enough. & remember that Toronto had Merkley on their "Do Not Draft" list. His attitude hasn't changed much so I doubt they jump to trade for him. They'll keep they'll roster as is and not think about this

Lol, the arrogance of this comment. As if you wouldn't have asked for as much money as you coulda got too. The contract'a signed. Deal with it and get over it. Lmao.

Didn't know about TOR's "DND" list for Merkley, thanks for the tip. I agree, roster most likely stays as is.

Thats great but I think the sharks would value Merkley higher than Lilegren. They have a lot invested in success

Lol. If that's the case then they should have higher value in Liljegren. Merkley may be slightly better offensively, but Liljegren is miles better defensively

This is a horrible take, Meier is very very good and the difference between him and Marner is no where close to 2 likely top 10 picks. What the Sharks are trading away here coyld be comparable to ottawa trading Stutzle, Sanderson, Tkachuk, and Brannstrom. The first 3 on their own are arguably worth Marner. Sharks get completely bent over in this trade

Merkley is literally unparalleled in his offensive talent. Lilegren is also a great Dman, but the sharks know what they have in Merkley and have worked with him for years now to improve his defensive woes and prepare him for a top NHL position.

Here is the true breakdown

Point
Marner >>> Meir
Goals
Marner << Meir
Potential
Marner >>>Meir
Salary
Marner <<<<<<<<< Meir

Marner is a more valuable player and he is a better player but his contract kills the value, thy would we give up our top prospect 2 1st and Meir for him? When we could keep the picks the prospect and Meir and also sign another high quality guy for 5.5-6 mil for the same cap hit as Meir. Now we have two all star quality top 6 forwards and picks and a good prospect Vs. Marner.
If we had a ton of cap space and a lot of strong top 6 players but no star I could see this working but as we stand now this would be a HARD NO!
