sorry, no amount of return will ever be enough to consider trading matthews

if it ever was enough, it would be so debilitating to the team trading for him that they wouldn't do it

In terms of "Fair" it is pretty close in my opinion. In terms of likely hood in either team accepting it, I would put it at 0%

Wow, trading Matthews a top 10 player in the NHL
Is a tough call. A top 5 Center(McDavid, Sid, MaCK, Draisaitl and Matthews 5th).

Unless you are blowing it up too. And then you are getting, their top young all-star caliber player in the NHL, their top prospect. And 2 1st round picks. And every team has those assets and none of them are A.Matthews or gonna be him.

With contracts and team needs taken into account, Winnipeg wouldn't do it.

Matthew's literally has such a ludicrously high ceiling though, like he could become a recurring 65 goal scorer, he's already basically the best goal scorer in the league besides Ovechkin, and he just turned 23. One year of Laine or Pionk is like, not even remotely worth it + hellebuyck. Also, Nylander is like... not a centre, I'd be really uncomfortable with our centre depth here

Not to mention he's developing a two way game, he's getting better defensively, led the league in shot blocks and takeaways among forwards?

No way am I ever trading him, you simply don't trade guys like that

The difference between Matthews and Laine can not be made up by the difference of the other two players.

Liane's goal scoring would help. Also, we would be getting the best goalie in the league. And finally, we upgrade our defence. We even save cap space. I know you don't trade guys like that. This is hypothetical. I'm just saying, if it happened, I wouldn't be mad. But I look forward to seeing Matthews score 50 next year. He's a top 5 player in the league.

Keep in mind there are people here who actually think this deal is in favour of the jets. I am not one of them, by the way. And I'm a big fan of Matthews. I mean, I just don't see why the jets do it.

How? They are giving up the best goalie in the league, a first line winger/ elite goal scorer, and a first pairing offensive defenseman. Yes, we are giving up a top 5 player in the league, and a rental starting goaltender, and a decent second pairing guy, but this deal is easily worth it for the leafs to me.

he was the best goalie last year, i wouldnt call him the best goalie in the league, laine is going to ask for similar to matthews/marner money and both are way better, we dont need an offensive d who came off a breakout, you dont trade players like auston matthews, you just dont. weakens our center depth and adds a lazy one dimensional winger who has a huge ego

People actually think WPJ are getting favored In this deal.

Trading Matthews a top 10 player in the NHL
Is Dumb; unless he asks to leave, or isn’t gonna re-sign. He’s A top 5 Center(McDavid, Sid, MaCK, Draisaitl and Matthews 5th, IMO).

Or unless you are blowing it up. And then you are getting, their top young all-star caliber player in the NHL, their top prospect. And 2 1st round picks. And you could probably add another prospect too. And every team has those assets and none of them are A.Matthews or gonna be him.

Wow, there are a lot of different opinions here. I have a feeling this thread isn't ending anytime soon. What you say here I highly disagree with, but as a whole this deal slightly favours the leafs.

That is true that Hellebuyck was the best goalie in the league last year by a wide margin in fact. However, goalies are wildly inconsistent and prior to last season there was not that much difference between Freddy and Connor. Laine still has a lot of struggles and his shooting has gone down hill as of late. Pionk is a fantastic powerplay quarterback, but he is only ok at 5v5. Matthews is a top 5 C and still only 23.

It won't happen. But Liane, in terms of gaol scoring, is almost as good as Matthews, although Matthews plays a much better all around game. Then having a huge upgrade at both d and goalie, it's worth it for me. But this trade isn't happening anyway, so I respect your opinion. Think what you want.
