I'm not sure why either team does this. Kassian is the only grit Edmonton has in their forward group. You could argue Khaira, but he only gets 8 minutes a game.

Carolina needs more grit up front and Gardiner's cap hit is too high to be playing on the 3rd pairing plus they have replacements for him in Fleury and Bean.

Edmonton needs a 2nd pairing defenceman. Gardiner's not the right fit but if they could get him for cheap they might go for it.

I wouldn’t consider such a move from oilers perspective. Wait till next year to give jones consistent time when bouch and broberg are pushing for a spot that’s a ton of inexperience on back end. Jones needs the minutes this year

Martinook, McGinn, and Foegle provide plenty of grit. They need more scoring up front if anything. Edmonton needs a 2nd pair guy, but 3 years of Gardiner makes no sense from a long term perspective.
