A Goalie makes it good

Created by: Remus
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 2, 2020
Published: Nov. 2, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Fleury's value should go down since there's no retention. I think he's still good enough to anchor the Oilers into the playoffs for a couple years

I think the main issue will be dumping Koskinen.

Tbh I think this team could be worse. On a shortened schedule, where Koskinen can start 70% of the games and still likely only play about 40, I think his stats will be better than Fleury's. Listen, we can only go with last season's performances for good immediate reference. Fleury had a .905 sv% behind a better defense. Koskinen posted a .917. His contract is worse than Koskinen's. If we're getting virtually nothing back for Koskinen as you suggest, it is essentially Koskinen, Lagesson and a 4th for Fleury? Please no.

Larsson to Niki is also obviously a downgrade. I get that there is a 3rd in there, but what are we trying to do this season? We have to be trying to win some playoff games. That trade does nothing to help that.

Fleury isn’t that much of an upgrade, and his contract is atrocious. You’re better off trading for someone like Raanta this year, and either re-signing him or another UFA goalie for next year.

Only problem is Klefbom will be out all season. Broberg will probably stay in Sweden. Bouchard won't be ready for top 4 minutes.

With age decline a huge possibility and Mike Smith being Mike Smith that duo could easily provide sub .900 goaltending for over 8M$ combined which would absolutely push Edmonton not only out of the playoff bubble but into the bottom strata of the league

While McDraisaitl are in prime no less like flushed cheeks

At very best they're .910

So Markstrom was the nuks mvp and carried them in the playoffs and got vezina votes and finished with a 9:18 save percentage on the season but Koskinen finished with a 9:17 save percentage and he’s garbage I don’t think so Edmonton goaltending will be fine, I see smith in more of a traditional backup role this yr with a shorten season no need to worry about over playing Koskinen
Flurry’s not the answer his play as fallen off the cliff if he was still a true #1 then Vegas would have never signed Lehner

They also signed him to an extension to be "the guy" and then traded and signed a new #1...things change and I think they would be happy to be rid of MAF's contract going forward

I mean fingers crossed he is ready but IMO he needs sheltered 3rd pairing minutes to learn the the league. His weakness have improved in the AHL. But the NHL is another step up. Give him a year to get use the competition. I mean he could step up and earn the minutes, he definitely has the offensive ceiling but not so much defensively.

So you think Fleury and his contract is better than Koskinen? I know stats aren't everything but despite playing on poorer Edmonton team, Koskinen had a better save percentage and GAA than Fleury, and is 2.5m cheaper. It's 2020.
Kassian....to trade him without getting similar cap back isn't practical for most teams.
