Montreal has to find a way to keep Danault

Created by: Bmersereau73

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
In my opinion Montreal cannot afford to lose Phillip Danault, Danault has become such an integral piece to this Montreal Canadiens team, He is one of the most underrated players in the league and one of the best 2 way centers that is starting to get reconization for the Selke. Some fans think that Danault is expendable due to our young depth at center, but in my opinion this is not the case, there is no guarantee that Suzuki or KK mature right away and turn into a true 1 and 2 center combo right away, and without Danault, there's no safe guard. Danault can still be a big part of the team, even if he is playing a 3rd line role, because he would still be our top penalty killer, play on our second unit power play, and the forward depth Montreal has means that Julien will roll 3 lines most nights instead of giving all of the minutes to Suzuki and KK, so Danault will still probably see 17-18 minutes a night, and take the key face offs, do the little things that help us win, and put up around 50 points in the proccess, Danault is such a valueable player, and one that Montreal can't afford to lose imo.

I would let go Lehky & Armia to sign Tatar 5x4,25M
and insert good old 800K $ player on the fourth

It doesn't sounds like Seattle will take Allen... They will have plenty of better option like Holtby, Fleury, Korpisalo/Merzlikins, Bishop/Khudobin, Varlamov. I think they will go with Juuslen or Mete... Why not Chiarot or Edmundson ? Because lot of team will give them 1st picks of prospect to take a bad contract on their teams. I think about Boychuk, Johnson or Gourde, JVR, Neal, Lucic, Eriksson, Seabrook, etc. If they get couple of these player, they will not have enough on the cap.

Ron Francis already said he likes the sound of a Holtby / Allen tandem, and I think Korpo and Elivs are exempt, not sure.

Tatar is going to cost way more than that.

Agreed, i dont see a scenario where Tatar is resigned unless he wants to hit the free agent market the follow year and decides to sign a one year deal with the habs. I agree that Danault is an important piece with all that he brings to the table but we also have the live with the cap hit and idk if 5.75 mil for your third line center, even with pk and defensive upside, works cap wise. On top of that i think Danault would get more on the open market than that in a normal year so depending on how the cap rebounds this year (if it does at all) he may feel his time in MTL in over. I do agree that we will be rolling our top three lines at a pretty even clip this season but that wont be the case in the coming years and Suzuki continues to develop that first line will start earning first line minutes, further reducing Danaults value.

The contract was more the high end of that Danault would be worth, could shorten the term if needed, and honestly Danault could still end up being the 2nd line center 2 seasons from now, and in my opinion is still 1st line center this upcoming season.

Agreed. He might not get the 5 year term, but there's no way he's making less than $5-5.5 mil/year (Unless he goes out and plays like absolute trash this year).

I don't know that Danault will stay though. There should be a decent market for him, and you're definitely better with him than without, but he didn't sound super impressed after the Habs were eliminated last year, but obviously that could change.

Yeah, I think that's true...Columbus fans say that it'll be Kivlenieks that gets exposed.
