he will get an offer sheet before that happens, and if it goes into the season they cant be over the cap so someone throws a 6 mill offer at him and they cant match.

Pulock is worth every bit of $5million and I truly appreciate the two year deal that allows for a big raise when he gets closer to UFA status.

so what team gets Barzal now? Islanders dont have the cap space to sign him, 70-80 point guy should be in the 7 mill range i would think.

Great AAV but bad term. Also this does mean Barzal contract's will not be negociated until the islanders do a move. Plus now we know why they traded toews, they really wouldn't afford Barzal if toews had stayed

Don't like this one, 2 year deal at that AAV is a bit of a head scratcher. Figured they would lock him up longer term. Unless they're very confident they can sign him before he actually hits Free Agency, this doesn't look too good.

Lou needs to dump Johnny Boychuk and/or Cal. It's gonna cost him big to trade either, especially with 2 years of term each remaining.I don't see any other practical way to sign Barzal.

Barzal is WIDE open and ripe for an offer sheet now. One of those six or seven teams with a lot of cap space has to go for the throat.

It's hard to call it a "bad" deal, I don't see Pulock failing to live up to it, it's more that some bad cap management put the Islanders in a position where they couldn't offer the AAV necessary to get some term. They can likely make an appropriate offer to Pulock at the end of this deal, but they took on a significant risk of the player walking away all to save a few dollars now, which is not a good look.

Overall, I still would say this is a "good contract". The Islanders are going to get more than $5M worth of defensemen from Pulock over the next two years, and if a player doesn't want to sign for longer than his RFA term, teams don't have a lot of recourse, so if this was what Pulock wanted, Lou didn't really mess up. That being said, the reality is the Islanders weren't in a position to offer more term and AAV to get him locked up, and putting the team in that position with other bad deals is the real problem here.

The problem with that is that no one who can afford him is good enough to want to give up multiple 1sts. Other than maybe CBJ, but they have their own big RFA to worry about.

He deserves that money for sure. But they should add more term with that money. So if I take the Barzal situation into account, this is a bad deal.

In general Lou deserves every bit of this pure torture as he cost the team with the Marleau and Zaitsev signings and payback came back fast for him.
