I don't understand why it's so difficult for folks to see that the Red Wings are not to take on older veteran players - even as good as a healthy Stamkos is - with big contracts, while giving up assets. Stevie is playing the long game by hoarding young players and draft picks, period. He's filling in holes with solid veterans on short, cheap contracts to bridge the gap until the kids are ready. Two off-seasons from now the Wings will be looking at a young core of Larkin, Mantha, Bertuzzi, Zadina, Raymond, Veleno, Seider, Berggren, Hronek, and whichever player they get in next year's 1st round. That's not even taking into consideration other solid prospects that may turn out to be contributors. They will have that core and over $40 million dollars in cap space. Some they might use next off-season to take a run at a big time free agent (maybe Dougie Hamilton), but even then they'll have over $30 in cap room heading into 2022-23. They aren't going to screw up that equation so they can win a handful more games this season and next by adding aging, big money stars. It makes no sense.
