Rangers decline that Wings deal. 50% plus a 3rd + 4th? No thanks.

Detroit declines, Smith sucks. Too bad Sergachev wont sign that offer sheet. And where's the $3.95M the Rangers need for their player bonuses?

Wings Decline too because even at 50% retained and a 3rd and 4th. It's not enough to take Smith.

Performance bonuses need to be accounted for so you’re roughly ~4M over the cap and have to carry over cap to the next year(s).

Pass on bringing Smith back to Detroit also.

I don't see Detroit doing it even with a 2nd.

Yeah they would, 1 year of a guy we can have sit on our bench or send to grand rapids for a year for a 2nd? It's just cap space and less then staal makes

Jimmy D wat let it happen!

Jimmy doesn't run the team, yzerman has full control now, this jimmy D narrative had to go away that fellow wings fans talk about. If he blocked us getting a 2nd round pick for 1 year contract that doesn't hurt us in anyway for a player that can be sent to grand rapids or ride the bench then we have a bigger problem in our organization

Funny thing is, Smith is more useful than Staal.

That may work with other teams but Smith played in Detroit and most Detroit fans know he is awful and he was awful when Detroit traded him to the Rangers. Staal is a cap dump and Detroit got a 2nd to take him. Staal doesn't take stupid penalties behind the play ruining score opportunities because he thinks he is a tough guy.

Well, I would have agreed with that assessment 2 years ago but Smith's aggressive forcheching as a forward last year was a lot less painful to watch than stationary Staal reaching out like he was sinking in quick sand.

Sure.

Best part of this is Smith whiffing on the puck after the goal.

Smith is never coming back to Detroit. We're quite Happy with how that trade worked out. Jonatan Berggren is tearing it up in Sweden this year. 17 points in 14 games thus far. Will look great in a Wings sweater soon. grin

Indeed he does. Wish he had room to play with NYR but Lafreniere is clogging the wing, cheers!

The Wings trade is good from a value standpoint in my opinion, but I doubt they'd ever want Smith back. The fanbase got overhyped on Smith and turned on him (myself included). Bringing Smith back for anything remotely near cap dump market value would draw negative attention to the organization from the less rational portion of the fanbase.
