Why would Columbus trade Domi when they just got him?

Columbus says no. Marner isn’t worth Jones alone.

This might be the closest trade value wise i have seen from the series of yours....

However makes little logical sense. While, yes Toronto’s RD could be better... in two years we now need to resign Domi and Mikheyev for pretty decent deals. and unless Rielly and Jones take very team friendly deals... they’re both looking at pretty big raises too. Merzlikins also needs a new deal in 2 years and that could be a raise as well.

Not to mention Hyman, Dermott, Lehtonen all need new deals after this year.... all of which are probably gonna be raises.

Seth Jones is also one of the best D men in the league.
The same argument goes for Marner... one of the best wingers in the league, but that’s a sensitive topic, and everyone has different opinions on it.

This just doesn’t really make sense for either team.

To counter your point of Columbus wins in the long run, they really don’t.

1- Marner is good, like really good but he also comes at a 10+ cap him limiting the cap space Columbus has.

2- Jones is Columbus best RHD and with Savard being a UFA after next season that would leave Holl and Peeke at the top 2 RHD.... that is less then ideal

3- this give Columbus a 1a/1b for 1 season and forces us to protect one of them, all but certainly losing the other to Seattle or Andersen as a UFA. Merzlinkins is expansion exempt and as a 1a goalie he is arguably one of the most valuable goalies in the league because he doesn’t have to be protected in expansion and you can protect another goalie you don’t want to lose.

4- moving Domi still comes back to Columbus’s biggest issue of no 2nd line center.

So maybe Columbus is a top team in years 4 and 5 of marners contract the years in between will be a struggle and will all depend on how the goalies and the defence improves. If Columbus can’t replace Jones in that time we could be screwed and left without a solid top pair d.

With 33 games of NHL experience you’re gonna definitively say that Merzlikins is way better than Andersen ? Not saying Columbus should take that deal but come on

Sums it up pretty well - maybe others @mapleleafs_queen9434 @theozler @bluejackets2000 and yourself on this thread can comment to add to this but

Let’s say instead of Marner it was Laine.

I feel like Columbus needs a legit goal scoring threat - not a playmaker who’s good at defence as well. Marner is great but not 10 mil - more 8-9.

Seth jones is 5 mil for 2 years than maybe 7-10 and would/ and still does provide more value to the jackets.

If it was jones for Laine + more (jets MUST add) than Columbus would entertain it as I think a guy who could get 30-50 goals would make Columbus a lot better plus playing a winger like that with Dubois would be unreal I think (I AM NOT SAYING LAINE > MARNER, I am just talking a need the jackets would like)

I think Marner would be a better fit then Laine tbh, we do have Atkinson who’s a former 40 goal scorer and Bjorkstrand who stepped up last year scoring 21 in a half season due to shutdown and injuries. We need someone to replace what Panarin brought tbh, a wing who can drive the offense and set up players like PLD, Atkinson, and Bjorkstrand.

The other issue about Laine is that he’s doesn’t play defence, and with torts as the head coach you better know how to play defence or you aren’t going to play.

I’d say the best fit would be Hoffman, but he’s also a UFA and you just have to convince him to come to Columbus and you lose nothing for acquiring him. Columbus doesn’t have the assets to go an acquire a top scorer unless the want to hurt the team to do so.

Marner is a better fit for sure, but I like the idea of Laine in CBJ and honestly feel like he should leave Winnipeg as I think torts/ the Columbus system could actually help Laine improve overall. But as you said Hoffman is solid too. I feel like some of the UFA’s gotta realize Columbus is a legit threat and with a a few more top6 pieces they could become a legit contender in the metro (they’re already a contender for the playoffs but some help would be nice).
