Revisionist Offseason

Created by: GMRyan
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 11, 2020
Published: Nov. 11, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Alright let’s imagine that everything plays out exactly the same with a few exceptions. Brodie, Bogosion and Lehtonen and Simmons are not signed. What else could they have done with that money?

Below you will see that I reversed 2 trades.

1st- Reversed Toews trade. I know ppl will rip me apart for bringing in another LHD but Toews is an elite defensive defender and I think he brings excellent value at that cost.

2nd-
Nate Schmidt is an amazing defender and is remarkably cheap at only a 3rd round pick

Is this reality better or worse?

(Also I left it over the cap with the assumption that they would waive someone or place someone on injury reserve closer the the start of the season)

sorry but there was no way in hell that Lou was ever giving Kyle a top 4 defenceman, there's a reason he traded him out of the conference to a rando gm

also, the schmidt deal is not good, he's expensive and he's more of the same, a poor man's morgan rielly who can quarterback a powerplay

an amazing defenceman, but not what we need. Brodie is cheaper, signed till the same age, and much better defensively

In no way is Lou trading Toews to the Leafs

and Schmidt has a 10 team M-NTC list, he could of had the leafs on that bc shocking I know not everyone wants to play for the Leafs

Forgot the LTIR nonsense. It's still a 20 man roster and 2m over the cap.
The addition of Schmidt over Brodie, might have been better for the Leafs. But as suggested above, Isles weren't trading Toews to the Leafs...and really not sure if the Leafs really wants him with Sandin/Dermot available to play at under 1m

Over 2 million in cap and at 20 man roster, this alone should tell you viability of what you did.

And like others mentioned, Islanders purposely traded Toews out of conference... I doubt the Leafs and Islanders would agree to a trade of this magnitude.

And maybe I'm of the lesser opinion, I'd prefer Brodie over Schmidt when you take salary and defensive play in the equation.

They probably never would have got the option to do this. I mean, it's Lou we are talking about here. As for Schmit, he has a NTC. Would he want to come here anyway? Toronto made the right choice for now the TJ.
