Columbus does not need Kerfoot... we have Jenner as a 3c already.

it's not filling a need or anything, but at least they get the best player in the deal out of it. They certainly make out better than toronto here though, who just gets older, slower and worse

Why not? This is great value for Kerfoot. I see your point, we need him for 3c, but I'd take this trade imo. Also, CBJ just signed Koivu, so it's a no go for them.

it makes the leafs worse. Koivu is, at best, a defensive 4C. he's even slower than Thornton and the leafs have nowhere to play them, then it makes them reliant on Thornton being able to keep up as a 3C for an entire year on a compressed schedule without crumbling into dust.

And Toronto gets a 2nd included, which is more than anyone would pay for him in the first place.

a 2nd rounder that will be closer to the 50th pick than the 30th isnt that valuable when weighted against ruining your depth.

The leafs also get a second and 2 million in cap space.

Cap space is only worth what you can fill it with, if you're a worse team at the end of the day cap space is redundant.

You can fill it with giving the leafs a 23 man roster.

another 4th liner or bottom pairing defender isnt going to help them near as much as kerfoot would.

Kerfoot for Savard was apparently discussed by both teams in the offseason, but it fell through because Dubas wanted an extra pick since Kerfoot had term while Savard doesn't and Columbus said no

The answer to the why is based on statement out of CBJ organization saying that they wanted to get Jenner onto the wing. Outside of that Kerfoot is better than Koivu so why not?

Jenner-Kerfoot-Foligno would be a sick 3rd line. Problem is that leaves guys like Foudy, Texier, Bemstrom to have to be either 4th line or 2nd line. 4th line would be bad for them. 2nd line would probably mean you’d have to trade Nyquist/Atkinson to make room imo

Koivu isn’t going to get traded unless he asks for a trade.... it would look really bad to move a player after he signs as a UFA if he hasn’t even played a game for the team. Columbus struggles with signing UFAs already doing this would make it next to impossible for us to sign a UFA.
