The Kings defense isn't as bad as you make it out to be. Maatta will fit in just fine next to Doughty, and Anderson is proving to be a quality 2LD. MacDermid and Clague will split time on the bottom pair. Sure, Leddy would be a moderate upgrade, but not at the point to where the Kings need to take on 2 years of a significantly overvalued contract without compensation. Before acquiring Maatta, I could see the Kings trading for Leddy. Now, it wouldn't make any sense for LA unless NY was paying them to take him.

As for Carter, I'm sure the Kings would be happy to be rid of his contract. However, the Kings aren't retaining that much salary unless at least a 2nd is coming back. Take his full contract, and the Kings will let him go for just a handshake.

Even with the retention, NSH isn't going to give up assets for Carter.

There was plenty of opportunity for Lamoriello to make this trade before the Kings acquired Olli Maata, and there were plenty of ACGMs from both LA fans and NYI fans suggesting such a trade, but the time has now passed the Islanders by.

I don't see anybody being interested in Jeff until the trade deadline, and then only if he shows some flashes of his old speed and scoring ability.
