Bogosian Paranoia

Created by: BulinWall
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 5, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Joe Smith said in his latest Q and A that Tampa offered Bogosian a 1 year contract a little higher than the offer the leafs sent him. Its probably due to the fit and ice time where Bogosian would most likely be the 6th or 7th D man in Tampa. That makes me think that Dubas probably promised him regular playing time on the roster. Dubas also said publicly that Dermott will be playing on the right side next season. In addition to that do you guys remember when Bogosian got signed there was a little buzz around Bogosian and Rielly being a good pair together? Maybe Dubas told Bogosian that he’d be paired with Rielly? Dubas has made a bunch of smart moves signing guys to cheap league min deals and signing Bogosian for 1 million to be scratched/bottom pair when they have cheaper options in Lehtonen, Dermott and Sandin? I think Holl may be the odd man out, It’s Brodie with Muzzin and it’s Rielly with Bogosian

Also Dan Milstein has a thing going here where his clients playing in the KHL come to Toronto and sign deals here (Zaitsev, Mikheyev, Barabanov) probably with the promise they’d get ice time. So I think for the most part Barabanov will be a fixture on the bottom 6 (unless he’s terrible)

Bogosian is gonna get eaten alive in TOR. The fans love to find a RHD to blame and he’s awful. First Zaitsev, then Ceci, now it’s Bogosian’s turn.

I think what you are going to see is Dmen rotating one and out of the lineup. Condensed season means players may need rest.

Zaitsev was okay, just a bad contract. Ceci was okay as long as he didn’t have the puck. Bogo at 1m seems like a good fit to me.

Bogosian could also be betting on himself and figured that he'd be able to take one of Holl, Dermott or Lehtonen's jobs.

Also he could have been nervous about waiting a month or more to sign, and totally miss out on a spot if TB couldn't clean up their cap mess (they still haven't).

I think the D this year is going to be a pretty fluid situation. It's going to be up to a few guys in that bottom group to grab a job and keep it.

He's streaky and hugely depends on Muzzin. Guess that in a good streak he could be better than Bogosian, but for a complete season I take Bogosian over Holl.

Bogosian was only half way decent in TB because he played with Hedman. TOR doesn’t have a Hedman to drag him along.

No team has a Hedman other than Tampa bay. He is by far the best Dman in the league.

That certainly doesn’t mean we need to play him in the top pair. If we did we at least have a muzzin...

I’m assuming he plays third pair and rotates with Dermott and lehtonen.

Had a pretty good streak all of last season, which muzzin missed portions of. Personally I thought he did well with Dermott too. Problems arose when he was paired with Marincin... but he’s bad enough to set anyone back a bit.

Leafs have enough defensive depth this season that they can juggle things around and find good fits. Would take a lot of injuries to get Marincin in.

I’m just saying Dubas was looking out for you Toronto fans getting you another RHD to blame.

Another reason for Bogosian wanting to play in Toronto could also just be that he wants to live in Toronto/Canada, and also there aren’t too many people whose ideal living place would be in Florida with the current global situation.

Bogo will absolutely be getting regular playing time. I certainly don't expect that ice time was guaranteed to him, but I am sure they told him that he would either have a regular spot or they would find a trade for him. Last year in Buffalo he asked for a trade on the day he was healthy scratched for the second time. Bogo has zero interest in sitting and he knows that other teams would be interested in him. Unfortunately for him his contract in Buffalo was a problem, but that won't be a problem with his current contract.

Dubas said that they would like to see him grow there and eventually challenge up the depth chart. As that is the only possible way for advancement there really wasn't anything else he could say.

No, I don't remember anything along those lines.

Quote:

Highly doubt it. That is not Dubas' decision to make. Bogo knows as well as anyone that those types of decisions are made at camp and then during the regular season.

The sensible spot for Bogo is on the third pairing where the team needs a presence and on the PK1.

Just nonsense that a GM would tell a player he is in the top 6 or who is going to be paired with.
I don't mind the Bogosian signing for 1m....but for Dmen destined to play the right side, he is not as good Brodie, Holl and maybe not as good as Dermot or Lehtonen.
