Ovechkin Pipe Dream

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 13, 2020
Published: Nov. 13, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Obviously it may not be the best idea to give someone who's in his mid 30s a long term contract, but I believe Ovechkin has the talent to continue scoring at an elite level for another decade. He rarely gets injured despite playing such a physical style.

Marner's cap hit is not going down, please stop with this. Also too much for Ovi, and too long.

Ya, even if it were possible to do that, Arizona would be the last team to accept that.

      It's certainly a contender.

But that Ovechkin deal will look bad eventually, and obviously whatever is going on with Marner will never happen.

@MitchMarnerElite Would you mind taking me off the list of people you tag for these? I'm not a Leafs fan, and these don't really interest me.

Arizona is in a financial mess, They can't afford a buyout on Matner eating 8 years of dead money. And it would cost far more then Dermott and a 2nd round pick to do it anyways. No team is helping out Toronto with Marner just so they can resign him cheaply. Dubas made this mess and has to learn to live with it.

This is insane. Ovechkin has already said he’ll never sign anywhere other than Washington in the NHL, but I’ll leave that for now.

You’re giving the Coyotes a 2nd + Dermott to take on $41 million in dead cap. That’s ridiculous.

And Theodore is one of the best D in the NHL, Vegas isn’t trading him, and especially not for Nylander.

Isn’t a contract termination free? The Yotes can send him through unconditional waivers and it won’t cost them a penny.

Based on the Marleau trade, it would cost 6 and a half 1sts to move $41 million.

But Mitch needs to agree to terminate the contract. You can’t just terminate without a player’s permission, unless they broke a law or a team rule (like not showing up to training camp, or not reporting to the AHL).

I heard Ovi wants a 12x7 contract on his next deal so gave it to him. I understand that as he ages he may become more one dimensional, but his shot is not going to disappear. I think he has what it takes to score 50 for another decade.

Where on earth did you hear that? He’s not playing for 7 years, in a recent interview it seemed like the max. he would stay in the NHL is 5 more years. And again, he’s said he would never sign anywhere other than Washington.
