Ottawa doesn’t have the roster space to take on a D cap dump at this point

I don't think they go for the Letang trade in this scenario. I would probably say they target Lindholm, giving up Lundkvist and another mid level prospect or picks. Also, Kravtsov is gonna stay in Russia this year so maybe they move him for a younger top 9 or bottom 6 forward plus a bottom pair guy. The best thing I can come up with is Krav (or something like Robertson and Tarnstrom), Smith, and maybe picks for Acciari and Nuttivara/Gudas at the deadline. Then you go with Laf-Chytil-Gauthier/Acciari on the third line and Lindholm-Trouba, Lindgren-Fox, and DeAngelo-Nuttivara/Gudas. I don't like giving up Lundkvist or Krav but I think that fits best in this scenario.

If Tyler Johnson, a player who is a 2nd liner and is actually good cost a 1st and a 2nd + salary retention to dump, smith will cost at least a 1st

the reason johnson costs so much is because he, unlike smith, is worth more and has more term.

Chicago Rejects, none of these pieces are enticing to the Hawks to trade Toews and retain 2.6 million

true, however, not even close to johnson. 5x4 is harder to move than 4.35x1

A 5x4 for a second liner isn’t as bad as a 4.35x1 for a healthy scratch

smith WAS playing top line minutes with trouba following the trade deadline for between 10-12 games. through those games, if im not mistaken, he had very positive advanced stats and troubas increased alongside. Its due to smiths stay at home style, something that can fit alongside any o dman.

He actually played well with Trouba. They seemed to support each other well.

From the PENS side, I'd take that deal. Not sure I agree that Letang wouldn't take that deal. With the talent the rangers have, they are closer to contending for a cup than the Pens are. The deal would help start getting younger for the Pens...
