The problem with trading Marner and getting equal value is, no matter what, both teams in the trade end up crippled. Either the Leafs leave themselves with a huge hole to fill in the top 6 and improve their D and the other team gives up an almost irreplaceable Dman, or Toronto Accepts a package of future assets, which does not fit our objective right now to win, and no rebuilding team would be willing to part with said assets to bring Marner in right now anyway. Or, Toronto receives a couple of wingers, neither of which is nearly as good, and now the team is worse, but in the same type of cap situation. We just traded 2 cheap wingers this offseason.
I’ve been on the Marner trade train for a long time, but I’ve come to the conclusion that it just wouldn’t be worth it, ever. The only way I see him getting moved, is if they ‘fail’ to perform this year, and Dubas gets canned. The new GM May move him, but I believe Dubas will lose his job before moving off of the big 3.
