How does this make any sense for Winnipeg? The whole reasoning of the Laine trade rumors is because Kevin Chevelldayoff doesn't want to give big money to another winger like Laine. He'd rather allocate it elsewhere. Marner makes more now then what Laine would receive in his next raise. yeah don't see Chevy making that deal.

No, because Mitch Marner makes more then what Patrik Laine would get from the Jets. So this trade makes absolutely no sense from Winnipegs perspective.

No way Winnipeg makes that move. They are not going to take on that salary the way the team operates it’s business financially. They are going to have a hard time paying Laine anything near to what he wants next year if they decide to keep him.

imo, we already have some wicked goal scorers, all or most of whom are better than laine

marner is a passer, a setup guy. that's invaluable on a team with matthews, tavares, and willy (maybe even future snipers like Robertson).

also, Marner simply blows laine out of the water in point totals and 2 way play, plus he has a deal with term and is a lovely lockeroom guy, so I'm taking him over laine all day, even if pionk comes with him

also, because I can't resist:

Just not true at all. They've been a cap team and will continue to be a cap team. Also, you obviously haven't run the numbers. Jets can pay Laine up to $12M per next season. The question is, will he score 120 points this season to deserve such a salary? Hopefully, but probably not. However, going over a point per game is likely IMO so a salary in the $9M range could make sense.

Do the Jets want to have that much cap wrapped up on the wings? probably not, but it depends on the ELCs they have available to them and what players they could acquire in a trade to be a top pair RHD or 2nd line C.

If a 1 for 1 type trade isn't there that makes the team better, we hope that Perfetti can be that 2C. Our LD is going to be very strong going forward with JMO, Samberg and Heinola. DeMelo, Pionk, Poolman is totally fine on RD as well. If we could trade a winger for a #1 RHD to push everyone down, great. I'm not sure that trade is out there though.

The offer here to assign even more cap to the Wing while diminishing our RD talent is an easy pass for the Jets. It's the opposite of what we're trying to do.

SOrry who are these wicked goal scorers you speak of? Matthews for sure, but after that who's better than Laine? You could make the argument for JT I guess, but other than that Laine is the best pure goal scorer. This kid needs a top 6 C consistently feeding him the puck

Agreed. I truly think Laine has one year left in the peg and I hope that year is spent scoring 50 goals so teams and piling on top of one another to trade for him

WPG fans are correct that they wont make this deal, but TOR fans are usually looking to trade marner for EQUAL value or a boatload of 1sts, etc... so it was of interest to me, what TOR would look like and whether the team would "look" better doing a trade that brings in a player just a step below Marner and addressing another area of weakness, while staying young.

IMO, this is a good trade for TOR, brings two young talented players (albeit, both coming up on salary increases), while making the team better.

I do agree that this is not a good trade for WPG, who's area of weakness is made worse by trading Pionk. Laine is a rather troublesome contract, as its likely he performs at a ppg pace and therefore falls into that 9mil range, albeit his attitude and two way game are still questionable. For WPG, I think they look elsewhere.

I don't think this deal works for either team but I'm just going to fantasize about a Toronto PP1 that has Matthews and Laine ripping one timers from their off wings

That's one season. If you look at each guy, outside of Mathews, Laine has 138 goals compared to Nylanders 86 in the same amount of games. You think he's the better goal scorer? Even JT through his first 4 season didnt score as much as Laine.

Nylander is a pretty good goal scorer yeah, not as clear cut as laine, but he's also way better in most other areas - lot better at possession, playmaking, even strength, puck handling etc. It's hard to judge him long term though because he had that horrible contract season where he came back and had 3 points in his first 21 games or something, then, despite playing 14 min a night on the third line still scored at a 55 point pace - just an all-round disaster year for him

As for the others, Laine might one day be better than Tavares, he's a lot younger, but it's not really close, Tavares is better right now, and he's a decent defensive centre as well.

Also, Laine is more of a powerplay guy, where-as our players score at even strength almost as much as they do on the powerplay. Even if you take Willy's garbage last season into account, he still outpaces Laine at 5v5 (with way less games), and the other guys its not even close vs. laine

since 16-17, that's at even strength

this is all situations
4cf620388cf85c3d922881e861ea1f17.png

that's just a little unfair because willy is the 4th best scorer on his powerplay and he regularly gets lower ice time than laine. He was on the second unit for most of his first 2 seasons

if we're talking last season, you see that with less ice time, nylander is a lot better, given the similarity in points is basically just from a bunch of secondary assists laine got

Wouldnt do this if im leafs, laine has tailed off recently goal scoring wise and marner is a superior playmaker.
