AS LONG AS WE HAVE CROSBY AND MALKIN WE WILL ALWAYS BE A CONTENDING TEAM!! (If we lose Crosby and Malkin, then... idk... I'll be heart broken. Might never watch hockey again. cry)

Even then, I doubt they do pick him unless they get a sweetener. Just like if Justin Faulk bounces back. Those kind of contracts are just too big.

No thanks. Gotta live with your GMs mistake... and I’m glad the kings have a horrible D. Top 5 pick (one of the great D prospects) next year and in a year or two contend.

Kings are not paying for Matheson, cap space is worth so much right now, for instance, the Kings could get Hoffman at $5.5 for one year, flip him at the deadline with 50% retained and teams would give up a first.

people said the same thing about Gudbranson, he's been moved twice now.

There is talent there, there is always a need for defense. This is an easier to move contract that people think.
He's a top 4 D man, His salary isn't bad for that and the term could be viewed as a good thing given that and the raising costs that will eventually be coming with a new TV deal.

Not saying LA is the right team for that, but they will be able to move him next year.

That's fine, Hoffman has asked for $5.5-6M, he's open to one year. Many teams can't do that unless they can shed contracts, and teams with space know that they can squeeze more out of teams the longer they wait. The Kings don't care about signing Hoffman or finding the perfect fit defenseman, they are rebuilding and see several teams that need immediate cap relief and will leverage their cap space from now until the trade deadline to the highest bidder. That is why this trade proposal takes away their biggest strength and handcuffs them long term.

Believe me, Matheson will not be a mistake in Pittsburgh. Can’t wait for him to prove you all wrong,

4M isn’t a hefty price tag. It’s the term that is bad. Find a Defense worth anything under 4M, not on an EL contract. go!!

Yes. Good luck moving him until he proves that he's worth it multiple seasons in a row.

you are saying this like you are bitter. No free agent is signing a 1 year deal somewhere just to be traded to play somewhere else mid season or whatever. It is what it is.
And no one LA included is giving him that which is why he's unsigned. He'll get 3.5-4 range most likely because teams don't like the 5v5 production.

Not bitter at all, I thought it was pretty clear that this is all about a response to this trade thread, the Kings want to use their cap space to get futures, I just used that as an option, I am totally fine with Hoffman signing elsewhere as long as Blake uses the cap space the Kings have to improve the Kings future for when they compete.

teams aren't going to use cap space like that though. There is no money coming in. They are taking loses as is. They aren't going to spend more, are you kidding me.
This is why teams can't dump salary and it's costing an arm and a leg. If there were fans in the seats and a normal year things would be different, but they aren't.

I don't think what I am saying is very controversial. AEG is not a poor owner, nor are the Kings a small market team, the team presently has the second-lowest cap hit in the league and is still currently rebuilding. I am not saying the Kings certainly have a trade for a cap dump on the table, just they would be crazy not to get max value anyone that asks for them to take on a cap dump and trades like the one above make no sense in the cap crunch. The cost impacts for the Kings taking on an inflated contract set to end this year or next at the trade deadline are negligible in comparison to the potential long-term dividends of a top 62 pick for a team that saw their team value explode after two cup wins that was successful because of Dean Lombardi trying to get as many picks as possible. But I think there is no convincing you of my logic, so I'll just leave this be.

In 18-19 the kings made 54 million operating revenue.
So no they aren't a "small" market team. But that's with people coming into the arena.
They don't have that anymore. Every team is reporting to take a loss this year. Every single one. And it is reportedly substantial.
You can only bleed so much cash.
