Expansion protect list

Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 22, 2020
Published: Nov. 22, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
8 FW/D and 1 goalie. I believe is better than 7 FW / 3 D / 1 G.

I think the Leafs would wanna keep their top 4 Dman (Dermott or Holl) more so than protect Kerfoot, Hyman and J. Anderson.

If the Leafs get Hyman, F. Andersen, Vesey or Simmonds resigned before the Draft that'll really confuse the matter even more.

The Leafs to play at least one or two of Engvall, Malgin, Brooks, J. Anderson or Petan in enough games this season to be able to qualify for the Expansion selection.

Sorry but I see Kerfoot and Dermott being exposed...I would guess Dubas either trades Kerfoot to another team or makes a "future consideration" trade with Seattle to keep them away from selecting him or J. Anderson. Maybe the Leafs offer a player off their exempt list to bribe the Kraken to take Engvall, Brooks or Malgin.

Scratch players = Expansion exposured players.
IR players = Expansion exempt players.
LTIR players = UFA players who Seattle have no use to take.

Looks about right. A sign to look for in the season is Hyman re-signing for next season. If that happens I think the plan will have changed to 7-3-1.

I think Hyman is a team player who is loyal enough to bypass his contract extension until after the Seattle Draft happens. He wants to stay and I think will play the dirty game like that....or Hyman goes public saying the Leafs are #1 on his UFA list, that'll scare the Kraken away.

Fans always like to see what they want to happen as what is likely/what will happen. Especially around expansion drafts with waiving of NMCs, UFAs not signing new deals, etc but hockey is still a job for these guys and they still want to have a contract.

It's hard for the Leafs concerning forwards, by Expansion rules the Leafs need to expose 2 experienced NHL forwards (Kerfoot and Engvall ?)who are under contract. Holl (or Dermott, depending on how he plays this coming season) would be the 1 required NHL Dman under contract and Hutch is the 1 NHL goalie required for exposure. Either way I see the Leafs making a "bribe" trade with R. Francis.

I think that the determining factor will be whether Anderson plays himself back into significance. Then I can see the Leafs protecting Kerfoot and re-signing Hyman early. Otherwise, I think that you and @Byrr are right on all counts.

Crap.... I forgot about Holl's M-NTC could mean the Leafs will be forced to protect him, I guess that means Dermott will be exposed instead (no big deal with the Leafs having Sandin ready to take a LHD spot in the future), unless Holl gets traded before Seattle Draft.

No, Holl can't use his NTC for that.

Don't worry . . . it's only NMCs that must be protected if the holder doesn't waive.

ahh....yes you're correct....still need to choose over Dermott or Holl to expose. I'm leaning towards Dermott now (though I've always been anti Holl, but Holl has a contract and he's RH and Sandin is ready to replace Dermott).

It is very unlikely that all the Leafs' players will remain the same between now and when the expansion draft occurs. There are not enough spots for players and that is going to result in problems. Undoubtedly Sandin and his agent know that next year in the AHL and then progressing to a complete dead-end 3rd pairing roll on the Leafs is the destruction of what should be a promising NHL career and start to put pressure on the organization to move him, if they haven't already.

Holl is a 3rd pair player who can move up to the top 4 with an injury, IMO you are better off going 7-3 and protecting Hyman and Kerfoot as well. You might also acquire someone by the deadline

I love these loyalty claims.

If he signs for one dollar more than leafs fans want you will immediately see 500 Hyman trade threads a day.

Loyalty only works one way with fans.

Yea, because it'll work out so well for Hyman's career to leave the Leafs first line to go to another team to become another overpaid middle 6 guy, who the fans hate. Ei: Lucic and many more.

Maybe, I see it very likely he selects Dermott if left unprotected. Ron is in the business of making Seattle good not Toronto

Dermott if not traded before hand, will likely be the target, the Leafs have Sandin to take his full time spot and nobody knows what Dermott's next contract will look like, or if the Leafs could afford it.

Too bad the Leafs can't put a package of Dermott to Tbay for Cernak.

Of course that also depends on the rest of the expansion draft, it looks very likely that Seattle will have an extremely stacked D-core with a potential top 4 LD from Carolina, Colorado, and/or Pittsburgh. As well as potentially getting Burns from San Jose and someone else for the right side from Buffalo

Unless Kerfoot in left un protected the Leafs got nothing special for the Kraken other than Dermott or Holl. Joey Anderson could have a William Karlsson impact (a forgotten nobody to star player) maybe if selected.

I proved nothing concerning whatever your point was>?

Hyman making 4.5 mill in Toronto to play with Matthews is money well spent....Hyman making 4.5 mill to go play 1st line minutes with 3rd line talent for the Kraken will be a joke.

For starters, he should be protected over Justin Holl (LOL).

My point is, you talk about how his "loyalty" should make him do things to help the Leafs possibly to his personal detriment and then follow it up with dumping on him.

Why should he show any loyalty to a fan base that will turn on him in the blink of an eye? You have made 2 posts bashing him after I merely suggested he should look out for himself.

I didn't bash him, fact is he is a 3rd line guy, but playing with Matthews inflates him...I say the same about Nylander who gets inflated and is extremely over rated, he isn't superstar material like ACGM's here say he is.
