I think we can all agree Eichel is the better playmaker Matthews is the better goal scorer. This shouldn’t be an argument.

No, how is eichel a better playmaker?

More assists in basically every season on a worse team. Eichel is a better playmaker.

Yes. However, Matthews is actually really good defensively. He’s got a great 2 way game.

Cmon man. Matthews is great but Eichel is a better playmaker. When Matthews had 33 assists and Eichel 42, Atlhough the difference is not mind blowing, you can’t really argue too much.

So, being a year older and deeper into prime eichel has generated 0.2 more primary assists per 60 than matthews. Eichels assists explode when you factor in secondary assists, meaning that he was the third last guy to touch the puck on his team before it went in. That doesnt scream play maker to me

See above. Over his career eichel is only 0.2 primary assists per 60 better than matthews. Eichels raw assist numbers are hugely inflated because he's the guy passing to the guy who passes to the guy who scores

Watch basketball if you don’t like secondary assist.

Eichel has more primary assists in his first four seasons than Matthews so the age argument doesn’t really matter since at the same age eichel gets more primary assist. You also can’t discount secondary assists, they’re not as important as primary assists but they do impact the game.

Who cares? An assist is an assist. Still both assists. Still provide the same amount of value to a team.

Except that it does matter when you're discussing whi is the better play maker. When raw assist totals for one guy are inflated because he's not even the secondary guy involved on the goal, it shows how you cant just use raw assist totals to say "× is a better play maker than y".
And to further that, simply being such an elite shooter is going to reduce matthews assist totals because he is going to shoot more from harder areas and he is going to be the designated triggerman on any given play.
Not to mention eichel has averaged more than 2 mins a game more than matthews to get those extra few assists.
But sure. Tell me more about raw totals

No, they dont. Most 2nd assists come from things like passing to a guy who skates it up the ice or back to the defender or whatever. They are more often than not, small simple plays that are significantly easier to get than primary assists. Valuable? Sure, as Valuable as a primary assist? Not even close

Still an assist. Ok, so some are easier to get. Overall though, you can’t really argue that secondary assists are not worth as much.

I mean, you can for all the reasons im arguing thst it's true. There have also been studies that show Secondary assists are often a product of 'noise' and vant be reliability repeated season to season, while primary assists (and goals) can

Yep, and thats rare. But thats a different argument than eichel being a better play maker than matthews. Secondary assists are what they are, consistency notwithstanding and he relies on them significantly more than matthews does.

Ok this is fair. Eichel is still a slightly better play maker I'd say, but there is no doubt Matthews is better due to his superiorty at defence and goal scoring, so really, I don't care if Eichel's better at playmaking anyway.
