If Dermott Has A Breakout Season

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 23, 2020
Published: Nov. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I think next season will be a make or break season for Travis Dermott. Heading into 2019/20, many Leaf fans including myself were hopeful that he would establish himself as a full-time defender in the team's top 4. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case as he still ended up being sheltered on the bottom pair. That's where he'll start again this season, but if he impresses, I expect him to overtake Justin Holl. In terms of talent, I believe he has the tools to succeed in a bigger role, it seems he just needs to find more consistency. It's not uncommon for defencemen to take time to develop, so I'm writing him off altogether.

Do you guys think Dermott will overtake Holl by the end of the season as Toronto's 4th defender?

im kind of hoping Dermott stays the same and Holl does well so Seattle takes Holl, we keep Dermott than he has his breakout the season after

What does dermott beeaking out have to do with Bernier suddenly not being a backup goalie who isnt very good?

You forgot to mention him losing his entire 2019 off-season and first month of the season recovering from a serious shoulder surgery.

Rehab is not the same as off-season training.

Yes I think Dermott passes Holl on the depth chart this year. Dermott becoming a legit Top 4 will force Leafs to protect 4+4.

Holl is likely still on the roster if/when this happens, and Kerfoot is the one off to Seattle (unless Leafs swing a deal).

Dermott's definitely going to Seattle. Leafs are protecting Rielly, Muzzin and Brodie I think.

leafs wont sign Bernier but yeah, if Dermott does improve his game, then Seattle will just take him instead of Holl. Dermott probably goes to Seattle regardless tbh. even if he stays the same, they'd still probably take him over Holl just because of age

I should add that unless Leafs are protecting 8 skaters, then it'll be Kerfoot, but there's no chance Seattle is taking Holl.

If Dermott takes a step this year, then it makes more sense to keep Dermott over Kerfoot, which would force 4 + 4.

I agree about Holl, doubt he's off to Seattle.

I kinda like the lineup you made. But I think it kinda nonsensical that fans have this rating system for players. If you are correct, and Dermot signs a 3.25m X 2 contract, maybe the Leafs are better protecting Holl who will 2m X 2 left his contract and then the Leafs would have an additional 1.25m in cap space for years. So which player has better "value" will the protection question for the Leafs.
If the Leafs sputter again and don't make it pass the first round, maybe trade Reilly, since he will be a UFA in the summer of 2022.

At the moment, it’s clear that the leafs would be much better protecting Kerfoot, one of the better 3Cs in the NHL, rather than dermott. We will see if the dermott hype finally comes to fruition, but If I was a betting man, I think dermott is the one to go to Seattle. Kerfoot is a much better player at the moment

IDK if Bernier wants to resign in Toronto, but he actually had a pretty good year in Detroit. Most of his games his GSAX was well above average. If he plays like that again, I’d consider signing him.

I think dermott is better than holl right now. One just happens to play well with muzzin and be right handed.

Yes you are right about the injury impacting his season. Who’d you think would replace Kerfoot if Seattle ends up picking him? Maybe Eric Staal?

Age is the reason why I would protect Dermott over other D and even Kerfoot. Yes it would suck to lose Kerfoot but losing Dermott would hurt more imo.

leafs left side for the future is set with:
    Rielly/Muzzin/Sandin

    assuming their right side is:
    Brodie/Lilijren/Holl

dermott would have to play right side cause I dont see him displacing anyone on the left

Aha! You noticed that Toronto will have to expose Kerfoot (and Engvall) in order to meet the qualifications for the expansion draft because they're the only 2 forwards who meet the requirements.

Toronto can't protect Kerfoot unless they go out and get another forward who meets the qualifying requirements, as only Engvall in addition to the Big Four does so and you have to expose TWO qualified forwards.
