Cap wise, yes, but I do feel bad that his retirement didn’t come on his own terms. It was the eye injury he sustained this year. What a warrior though

Oh 100%, Im a huge Boychuk fan and wish he could have went out on his own. Still a good player when healthy even if he's overpaid. great career for him to look back on though

Indeed, I feel terrible. I wouldn’t be surprise if he’s back w the isles in an office role though tbh

One of my favorite players in this league. Sucks to see him go but it was probably time. What a career. On the business side of things, this works out for the Islanders.

They’re putting him on LTIR, not officially retiring ig. We get the cap relief, he gets his pay. It’s as much of a win-win as you can get in a situation like this I guess

He's over 35...doesn't it count against the cap? or is that cancelled if it's a forced retirement due to injury?

They said his career is over due to injury, which apparently isn’t an official retirement. He’ll be on LTIR for the remainder of his contract

Gotcha - makes sense.

I wonder if they would've still traded Toews if they knew this earlier... (though it's probably not a total surprise to them)

That only applies if he was over 35 when he signed the deal.

Lol no he wasn't. He was a great Bruin. You wouldn't have won the Cup without him.

You can say that about maybe 15 guys on the team. He was the most overrated bruins in franchise history. The answer that no one could give me when he was in boston after they sung his praises: What was he good at?

He was a poor mans phaneuf.

I'm guessing they would have. We got a great return for Toews which helps us after moving out similar picks for Pageau at the deadline. Toews really didn't have a place in the top 4 with Pulock, Pelech, Mayfield and Dobson so the two 2nd's is definitely worth moving him.

No, he was really good defensively and was at his best during those Bruins years. There's a difference between overrated and loved. Sure it's a 20-man contribution but you aren't winning if McQuaid/Kaberle is playing on that 2nd pair.

He didn't have to be good at one particular thing. He was a very good all around player. I'd love to know how he was rated, because I'm pretty sure everyone considered him a strong #3 defenseman in his prime.

I’d say keep him around the organization in some capacity, he seemed happy to be here from day 1 and has been a warrior and awesome locker room presence ever since.

Happy for the cap space, devastated about the circumstances that gave it to us. Eye injuries are brutal, best of luck to him in retirement. Would love to see him back in the FO some day soon
