Defensemen get paid for points, not for, you know, actual defensive ability. So this seems fair.

That's okay. He's a third pairing offensive specialist so far, so the contract is fair. People on here talk about him like he's in the Josi / Hedman range, which is pure fantasy.

Fair contract. So now Tampa is about $2 million over the cap. If they trade Killorn they can sign Cernak, and after that either Cirelli or one of the full NTC players would need to be traded.

who all get's moved for this contract to fit in??? I think Cirelli gets around the same...

Well i think Tampa only signed him since they have a way to get back under the cap but easy ways to get under the cap would be to trade Coburn, Paquette, Killorn, Johnson

Has anybody else considered that Tampa isn't over the cap until Steven Stamkos is cleared to play again?

Now they have to find a way to trade Killorn and McDonagh or Johnson. It could be Gourde or Palat also, but I really don't want to see either of those guys go. Wish Gourde had more like 4 mil contract.

Yes, I think so. The abortive effort to have him play in the SC playoffs has really cast doubt on his ability to open the season, at least in my mind.

If they didn't think that they could deal their guys, they wouldn't have signed Sergachev, I don't think. It makes me wonder who they have lined up something with?

I wouldn't be surprised if Killorn or maybe (but probably not) Johnson is heading to Nashville.

He would be a top 3 defender on basically every team in the league.

He's top 3 in Tampa. He's on the ice as often at Toews and Krug.

He played less than Hedman, McDonagh, and Shattenkirk last year, and pretty close to Cernak. This year I'd expect him to play top 3 minutes though.

Hedman averaged 24:01
McD averaged 20:42
Sergachev averaged 20:22
Shattenkirk averaged 18:54.
Cernak averaged 18:57

Cernak killed more penalties. Shattenkirk and Sergachev played equal pp time on the second unit.
And lets be honest, if you have the opportunity to sign Shattenkirk to that deal you take it. No Shattenkirk Serg would've played even more. Tampa had enviable Blueline depth this past season.

Seems like a salary cap cheat which Tbay can get away with, LTIR Stamkos until the playoffs, than Tbay gets a 90 million team.

About what he's worth right now. Solid contract, might hurt when he has to resign in 3 years, but it keeps Tampa competitive until then.

I been saying they’re gonna make everyone scratch their heads with great moves. Great management, and scouting. Plus now the teams buying in - they’re tryna be a modern dynasty which is even crazier considering we got COVID cap.

I must say, the fact that there's been zero activity (no UFA's, RFA's, Trades) around the league in a couple weeks was very concerning to me and had me convinced that the January 1st start date was pie in the sky. I still think it's a reach, but it's nice to see something of consequence actually happen. A+ deal for TBL, btw.

The nuclear bomb option for JBB to get this team under the cap has to be to trade away his 2021 1st round pick in order to entice a team like NJD, OTT, or LAK to take on one of their vet contracts. This situation shows JBB's excellent foresight in holding on to that 1st rounder. And yes, Tyler Johnson has negative value, and he will prove more difficult to trade than Gourde. But, things are not at bad as they seem.

That is what's going to happen. Unless they buy out Johnson or somebody else.
