Sharks give TB some cap relief

Created by: DReedy14
Team: 2020-21 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 25, 2020
Published: Nov. 25, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I doubt DW makes the move, but is that trade fair?

Seems as though TB will have to give up a lot to make someone take on Tyler Johnson's contract. Rather than giving up picks, this trade gets 2.5 mil in cap space but they have to retain and give up a couple of picks.

Gambrell is just to send them something back that won't hurt their cap. Sharks don't want another contract, but they get a middle-six forward who can play C or wing at just $2.5 mil/year.

Yeah BriseBois isn't eating 1/2 of Tyler Johnson's salary for the next 4 years. And it would still cost more then just a 3rd and 5th round pick on top of it to move that contract.

That feels like a loooong time to be paying out for minimal cap relief today. If I'm Wilson I at least consider it - though I'd rather have a 2nd & I think that's fair - but if I'm BriseBois that's not an offer I would make.

I don't think BriseBois is planning on retaining that much of Johnson's contract. By the time Johnson's deal is over they will have to sign Point, Sergachev, Cirelli, Cernak, Coleman, Foote, Volkov, Joseph, Stephens, and Goodrow. I don't know how Tampa keeps all those guys, but the ones they do keep will need raises.

I don't mind this from a Sharks perspective (although I'm not a big fan of Johnson) but there is 0 chance the Bolts retain half of Johnson's contract for 4 years. 2.5 million dollars cleared is not nearly enough to justify them doing this.

No for the whole thing. If tb wanted to move half his contract they would have to give up a 2nd. No ones gonna let them off easy especially after the sergachev signing theyre in a worse cap situation.

Or they just trade Killorn and Palat instead. Tampa's going to walk out of this with more draft/prospect revenue than they started with

Palats too important to them to trade him. Killorn will get traded but i dont know if that will be enough. I doubt highly that they end up with more draft capital than they started with.

TB is almost $2 mil over the cap. Trading Killorn would clear almost $4.5 mil, leaving about $2.5 million to sign Cirelli and Cernak. Even if Cirelli signs for $4 mil/year and Cernak for $1 mil/year (both well below their values), the Lightning still need to cut cap space.
