I feel like NYR are the only team that could literally aquire Laine today if they wanted to.

Not really. I think many teams can.

LAK for example could do Turcotte/Vilardi + Fagemo + 2nd

I'm pretty sure that Rangers fans overvalue Fox by quite a bit. Yeah he's a good top 4 D and could turn into a top 2 D, but Laine is one ofthe best goal scorers in the league, and in case you haven't heard you have to score to win.

LA couldn't afford to lose those pieces where Rangers have litlerally 5 top 4 defenseman(2 of which are prospects who have that projection)

How is he overvalued... We just don't want to trade him?

Laine is great but no one is giving that much. You have to score to win? Didn't know that!

I'd do something like this:

New York Rangers
- Patrik Laine
Winnipeg Jets
- Pavel Buchnevich
- Braden Schneider
- 2022 2nd-round pick

That's a huge underpay though. Weren't you and I just arguing a month ago about Laines goal scoring capabilities and how you believe he will be a 60 goal scorer?

Not trying to be rude or start an argument, I'm just a little confused.

Oh for sure, I'm just showing the base of the deal. Willing to add another prospect or pick if needed.

More of an indictment on our W depth than Laine's abilities.

Then how did the rangers get swept in the qualifiers but the isles get to the ecf. You need to stop goals to win. If they dont score you cant lose can you?

If you don't score you can't win either.

Quite the opposite. Fox is a better overall d-man than Makar and Hughes. Now, he does NOT have their offensive instincts but let's be serious here but in terms of defense he's way ahead of them.

You could add 2 firsts to Laine and I'd still decline. Fox leaving would leave a gaping hole in our d-core that no one can replace.

It's easier to be good at offense than being good at defense. Plus you have twice as much forwards as you have defenders, which makes d-men VERY valuable. See how Matheson, JJ (arghhhh) and Ceci got new contracts even if their last 2 seasons were pretty terrible?

I disagree with that first sentence 100% especially at the NHL level.

You can teach young players how to play defense, you cannot teach them offense. They either have those offense instincs or they don't.

Drew Doughty is a perfect example. He was more noted for being an offensive defenseman as a prospect, although his defense was underrated, it was not the most notebale aspect of his game. In his first NHL season he was horrible defensively. All offense, no defense. In the following off-season and during the next season he worked at his defense game and really excelled and soon became known as the most complete defenseman of his generation.

There are many more examples, but that's the best one I can think of.

The Kings have a better chance at developing Tobias Bjornfot into an elite shut down defenseman than they do making him a 50 point dman. Not sure why I picked Bjornfot, but I did lol.

Fine washington losing in 5 in their first playoff series. My point was defense is more important than offense.

Ok but you cant lose if they dont score. If you score 6 goals you could still lose, if they score 0 you cant.

Rangers were already top 5 in scoring last season, and were one of only 2 teams that didn't get shut out in a single game (that other team was Tampa). Scoring isn't their big problem...
