This is stupid, but Bobby Orr shouldn’t count as a defenseman, he should count as a 4th forward.

Orr does have the second best plus minus of all time though. I know plus minus only gives a very rough idea of how good a player is but still... his +582 can't be ignored when evaluating his defensive abilities.

theres not enough love for what Shore brought to his team, and really the league. they marketed themselves around him.

Third most hart trophies ever, really kind of crazy the lack of love.

Almost had him in my top 10, guy is never mentioned

You're right. A few years I went to the Pierre's Pilote's "wake" at the arena in Penetang Ontario. Great talks given by his family and friends. Plus they had film clips of Pierre speaking throughout his life.
One I remember was telling of winning his Norris trophies. The NHL trophies are glamorous, but after winning his first Norris, the NHL sent him in the mail, a wall plague...signifiying his Norris winning achievement. Two years later he wins the Norris again, and again he gets plague in the mail.
Pilote phones, NHL VP Brian O'Neill, and tells him " Gee. I already have a plague, can't you send me a "mini Norris trophy" for winning it a second time?
O'Neill ponders for a bit then tells Pilote. "OK, but it will cost you 50 dollars"
Two years later Pilote wins the Norris again, before the plague is sent He phones O'Neill again. "Just send me a mini Norris trophy. Yea, I know it will cost me another 50 fuc*ing bucks."

A lot of great players here, but Lidstrom despite Bourque being on this list, is far and away the second best defenseman here.

Bobby Orr. It's an unpopular opinion, but imo Lidström is the No. 1 all time.

Hockey was so different game back in the 1970s it's just not comparable to modern day hockey in any meaningful way.

That is just my opinion though. I won't say it's wrong to think otherwise.

I agree with that, but it's hard to tell since they played in completely different eras. How would Orr play in the late 90s early 2000s/Lidstrom in Orrs era.

Personally I'd say Lidstrom was better as an all around defenseman, but Orr was better offensively.

In this old guy’s opinion it’s:

1 Orr

2 Harvey

3 Lidstrom

4 Bourque

5 Robinson

6 Shore (I’m old but not this old)

7 Potvin

8 Coffey

9 Chelios

10 Pronger
