Can They Contend For 3 Seasons - Part 2

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 30, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is based on part 1 which I made yesterday. I made a few tweaks to it based on the feedback I received. The main moves here is the Hyman discount and Reimer signing. I didn't have cap space to sign a more expensive goalie and I feel Reimer was decent last season. Don't think this is a defence that will give up a lot of shots anyway.

    In short:
    Goaltending isn’t good enough.
Better off keeping Holl and Engvall if trading them doesn’t make the team better or open up a spot for a rookie.
That 3rd D pairing is asking to be ****ed with. Better off playing Sandin with Brodie and Muzzin with Lilligren. Trade futures for a good dependable RD or just keep Holl and use him with Reilly.
Hyman will have to take less, or go play on a less good team.

It ain’t gonna be easy after this season, gang.

Yeah I guess your D pairings could work as well. I just wanted Sandin and Liljegren to be more sheltered coming into their first full season, which is why I put them together on the third pair.

I love everything Toronto did this offseason. Brodie, Bogs, Simmons, Thornton, Vesey, Spezza and Dermott signings. And the NHL level, goalie depth. And Lehtonen and Barbabnov signings should help both defense and NHL level depth.

I didn’t love the return for A.Johnsson, but he needed traded and I’m sure there weren’t a ton of teams knocking down their door in this flat cap year. I like what they got back from Kapanen. I just hate the Amirov pick. That’s the only thing I really, really, disliked. If they would have picked C.Zary or H.Lapierre, IMO it would have been a Grand slam offseason.

But still they addressed every need on their NHL roster. Toughness, leadership, defense, NHL level depth. Check, Check, Check and Check. Toronto would get an “A” from me for this off-season. It would’ve been an”A+” if they didn’t draft Amirov.

I agree with your analysis, think the leafs did a really good for the most part in addressing their needs. As for the Amirov pick, it is definitely concerning since the guy has yet to establish himself as a full time player in the KHL and he’s 19 already. However, when I have seen him play at the top level, he seems like an impactful player. Really good skating and excellent hands, plus is relentless on the forecheck while has competent defensive awareness. The main issue with him is he has poor finishing. He could be a decent bottom 6 player with his skillset.

That’s fair, if you don’t think any of their players are good, then obviously you won’t feel they can get far.

It’s not that i don’t think they’re good, its that i don’t think they’re in the right spot for a winning organization. Matthews is, but he still needs to prove it. I think Reilly would be an awesome offensive leaning number two, but he’s miscast as an all around number one. Soon and so forth.

What is your opinion on Tavares? Do you think he is a good player?
