Theyll make the playoffs but how can they become contenders

Description
I think this team is a 2nd round exit at best unless Gaudreau and Monahan live up to their abilities and actually produce in the playoffs, then MAYBR I could see them as a finals team. I believe tho that they're missing pieces to become a championship club, I just don't know how they become any more than just one of those playoff teams who can't make it past the 1st round.

My Question is after this year, is there a star player that they could acquire to become a Championship team? Whether that be on the blue line or at forward, Imo I believe they need a true star forward.

I like the defence both now and for the future with Andersson, Hanifin and Valimaki as the building blocks, Giordano and Tanev when healthy are great veteran support pieces, and they have decent prospects in Yelesin, and Lerby.

The forward spot is questionable, Dube needs to take a step and elevate his game next year if he wants to remain a part of the Flames because he is very talented and I doubt the Flames want to lose him to SEA. Mangiapane is the guy I think they'll lose to the Kraken due to the fact that idk if Lucic will actually waive his NMC. If Gaudreau and Monahan underperform again this year it's likely one or both players get moved. Tkachuk, Dube, and Pelletier are the only real building blocks on forward I think this club has.

I don't know about now or next year, but anyone in need of a true 1C in 2 years has to be thinking about UFA Barkov.

Should Florida remain on the cusp of becoming something and being completely irrelevant, he could be looking for an opportunity elsewhere. I don't know that for sure, but hard to see him signing for 8 years with the Panthers if the direction of the franchise is nowhere.

Who’s available for trade from the Flames for that star forward? Assuming the guys listed as building blocks aren’t available, and that draft picks would be in play.

Edit: obviously the spare parts would be available, but who are the best couple of guys you’d be willing to trade for a legit star forward?

Completely agree and I'm somebody who is a fan of the Panthers, especially Barkov as he's one player I find incredibly fascinating to watch. I just have my doubts that the flames will be a team who can compete for the cup in 2 years when Barkov is a UFA and that could definitely affect his decision. The one guy I thought of as a "star level" player that could be moved would be Stamkos.

Stamkos has repeatedly said he got a NMC for a reason, I believe that, so I'm done arguing anyone there. I'm sure JBB would move him, but as some GM said this offseason, a player having a NMC makes them more powerful than ownership.

Ok well let's use Jack Eichel (hypothetical not saying its an actual possibility) as an example. Monahan 100% would be the biggest piece in the deal, along with at least 2 1sts, or 1 1st and a couple good prospects (not Pelletier). But I would say if it happened before the expansion draft then Monahan + Mangiapane + 2021 1st (& maybe another 1st) & Matthew Phillips.

I do too but I doubt Montreal trades him unless its an overpay like what Ottawa got for Pageau.

Yeah, Danault seems to have changed his tune lately about his future role on MTL. Perhaps taking the "as long as I get paid" view now.

If MTL is committed to kotkaniemi and Suzuki as their top 6 C, maybe theyll decide to trade him.

I think during these times where the financial future is up in the air everywhere, having the "I wanna get paid immediately" mentality is the right one. Like what if he gets hurt this year? That'll completely affect his UFA status.

Yeah I agree as a fit it would work, the offseason would be hard for CGY tho cuz you don't want to have Backlund making over 5mil to be your 3rd line centre (even though I know that's where he probably should be) and then paying Monahan over 6mil and Danault probably 5.5-6.5 mil too.

The 2022 UFA market is going to be very stacked, Barkov, Zibanejad, Couturier, Gaudreau, Rielly, Trocheck, Domi, Jones, Merzlikins, Korpisalo, Pulock, Giroux, Burakovsky, Kadri, Klingberg, Parayko, Rakell, H. Lindholm, Manson, Kuemper, Nurse, Petersen, Hertl, R. Smith.

A lot of these players will sign extensions before then but its an interesting list to look at. That's not even including Bergeron, Malkin, Letang, Subban, or Giordano

The moves CGY made this summer indicates they want to win now, its not a big deal is Backlund is making that much to be the 3c. They can buy him out in a few years.

Mangiapane, Hanifin, and Bennett would probably be the max pieces we could part with for the right package. If it’s a legit star 1C Monahan would be in play.

In response to OP I think we need at least a solid top 6 scoring forward (25+ goals per year kinda guy, we need goal scorers not playmakers), preferably right shot, preferably physical, good defensively is a bonus. I’m thinking probably a RW, a true 1C would be nice though, those just don’t tend to be available.

I also like the way our D stacks up for the short and long term, especially on the left side (although I would rank Kylington, Mackey, Kuznetsov, and Poirier all above Lerby tbh). A little less sure about the right side long term, we could use a long term 2RD behind Andersson who can take over when Tanev starts to falter, and I don’t know if we have that (not sold on Yelesin being a top 4 D, and I’m not necessarily the biggest fan of Boltmann either).

I’m pretty confident Lucic waives his NMC, there’s no point for him not to, he’s not getting taken, and he’d probably get bought out if he did not agree to waive. So at this point in time the plan would be to protect Mangiapane. Bennett, Kylington, or Simon will be the sacrifice.

What if they trade something like Bennett + for Danault and find a way to sign Granlund?
