Most unfortunate Sakic trade, not a total fleecing, I love Compher and Zadorov (now Saad in this trade tree) but man was not on the winning side. Interesting progression though, let Stastny walk, lose O'Reilly trade, win the ever living crap out of the Duchene trade.

Didn’t exactly let Stastny walk, reportedly they had an agreement with him to allow them to match any offer he got and Stastny didn’t bother. Don’t forget Roy’s finger prints are all over that ROR trade as Roy had coached Grigorenko in juniors and wanted him as part of the package (ironically he recently signed with CBJ).

Not just the Duchene trade, but every trade since then too. Toews for some spare seconds? Kerfoot and Barrie for Kadri? Saad for Zadorov? Burakovsky for spare parts? Graves for Bigras?

I can tell you exactly why it was like a switch flipped- Colorado hired an analytics department, and the computer kids know what they're doing! You have to credit Sakic for being a saavy negotiator in these areas - the Duchene trade especially - but they always seem to know what players to target and that's because they have a leg up on most of the other teams. The Islanders didn't know what they had in Toews. Same with the Rangers with Graves. Toronto might have known what they had in Kadri but stupidly ignored their own people in search of the elusive RHD. And Colorado swooped in. That's the work of smart people who know how to interpret underlying numbers.

it seems like every deal involving ROR has been a fleece. Compher and Zadorov really didn't turn into much. Then you get the chance when he's in Buffalo where it's 2 Spare Parts and a Retiree with a first round pick which did turn into Montour, and a 2nd round pick that we don't know about yet was quite the trade too. So I guess it's just O'Reilly. I know one. Mitchell Marner, and Auston Matthews for Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen close to even enough. Toronto might have to offload another contract but it seems pretty close in cap.

It's true, trading away O'Reilly, while it gets better, isn't quite a Suzuki, Tatar & 2nd kinda deal ever. While I respect Marner and Matthews, I am gonna stick with my playoff series winners.
