I'm not sure why the Devils would do this this year. They don't need a veteran C right now. I actually do think they might sign him next season with Zajac coming off the books. They could bring Stepan in as a veteran 3C on an affordable two or three year contract.

There's no cap dumps right now that are likely to push for a 1st rounder. This is one year of money for a second round pick. I don't understand what the issue would be for NJ.

More than anything, it's adding a 5th center which would probably push Zacha to the wing. That doesn't work when they've got several young wingers that they're trying to fit into the lineup already. It just wouldn't make sense right now.
