Would you say this is a playoff team?

Alex Ovechkin was "not a playoff performer" and now he has a Conn Smythe. Nylander is only 24 and you cant blame him for not being a playoff performer when the whole team hasn't performed in the playoffs.

im personally not opposed to the idea, since his value is stupid high right now. he can fix our cap sitution, and if theres another second line winger to be had (Duclair) i say go for it.

He's a secondary scoring player which is why I added him in. The playoff performers are Pesce, Martinook, and Martin, giving us the depth we lack.

It's pretty well public knowledge at this point that his value isn't stupid high though. Majority of GM's are from the old boys club (think Brian Burke).

A playoff team? They're a playoff team both before and after the trade. Are they better? I don't think so. I think the downgrade up front (even including Duclair taking a team-friendly deal) isn't worth the upgrade on D. This doesn't even include the value lost at the draft which could be better used I think as potential long term asset or trade chip.

I also think Toronto has some promising D prospects so I'm optimistic that the backend will improve on their own if we're somewhat patient.

true. I think Nylander has not been shopped, but if he were i think he would fetch a good piece.

To be clear, i don't want to trade nylander as a first option, but if a right offer comes alone and plugs our holes in the roster, i think it should be jumped on.

I just love how people could watch marner float around like he's high all season and then come at Nylander with some grade school insult like floatlander

Marner offers more than Nylander. If we are trading Marner, we are losing a 90 point playmaker (imagine if Tampa traded Kucherov). In short, Nylander is replaceable and Marner is not

I have a theory-A large percentage (Let's say 25-30%) of Leafs fans on here like their prospects more than they like their actual NHLers.

Ie. "Liljegren is an AMAZING defense prospect...the next Pietrangelo! Also, Nylander sucks, despite the numbers saying otherwise...eye test is much more accurate...4 pts in 5 playoff games last year? Pffffff, he was invisible!"

Yes, because as everyone knows Matt Martin will shoot 18% each year in the playoffs from now on!!!

I don't know about you, but it seems to me that Martin seems to have his most success playing with other bangers and crashers.

So obviously his best spot is with Robertson and Thornton!!

Top 6 is obviously downgraded.

Third line is a mix and match of one skilled player, and two physical 20 pt. guys (one of which isn't suited for a checking line), so they should provide 12-14 min of hitting a bit I guess?

All of that to move from Holl to Pesce in the Top 4, because obviously Pesce is Nylander + 1st better than Holl!

Nylander is a better goal scorer and is better defensively and he gets significantly less power play time with worse players, but sure. "He floats " so he needs to go. Nonsense

Did you say Nylander is better defensively than Marner? Does Nylander even know what defense is?

What actual holes do the Leafs have at the moment though? They obviously are not perfect, but...

They have 5 Top 6 fwds (and 3 solid candidates to play with them).

They have about 10 players to fill out their bottom 6, most of which are capable bottom 6 players.

They have 3 solid Top 4 Dmen with Holl, Dermott and Lehtonen able to fight out it for the 4th spot.

Leaving 4 or 5 options for the bottom pairing, some of which have dominated those minutes in the past.

And unitl last year Freddy was a Top 12 or so goalie.

We also have a coach with a bit different system that will now have an entire training camp to implement it.

I really don't see how Nylander moving plugs any holes without leaving a bigger one in the Top 6.

You’re aware Nylander was on pace for 40 goals, right? I mean, you’re right that Marner is better, but after this trade you have 0.5mil in cap space left. How are you replacing Nylander?

You are aware Marner was on pace for 93 points right? You can easily replace a potential 40 goal scorer than as to a 93 point playmaker. Moving away from Marner to keep Nylander is calling for failure. I would genuinely hope the Leafs trade Matthews if Marner is gone

I’m not saying trade Marner. I’m saying keep both.

The thought that the Leafs would have to add a first to their side of this trade is hilarious, and suggests to me that this construction isn't serious.

Then how do the Leafs upgrade their defense if they keep both. They can't.
