Parise revisit Staple QA

Team: 2020-21 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 3, 2020
Published: Dec. 3, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Staple mentioned in his Q&A that with Boychuk LTIR they theoretically could revisit the Parise trade. Just wanted to model it out, he thinks the two 2nds from Toews deal and a prospect might get it done. I had to retain a mill on Parise to make it work.

Wild aren't retaining, but especially not if Ladd is still coming back. Isles can dump Clutterbuck or whoever if they want to make it work.

I really don't understand why they would want to add Parise. It never made sense. They have Lee and Beauvillier on the left. They're now spending a fortune down the middle. Parise is better than Ladd (obviously) but at the expense of the increased cap hit and term? Keep the picks and prospects.

I think you have the right package for this deal, though I'm not a Bellows fan. I could be mistaken but I think I remember hearing Guerin was willing to go 1.5 million on retention, my memory fails me a bit more than I'd like though.

Agreed. This was just speculation, but the isles deserve to have this blow up in their face if they make this trade.

Yeah, I'm not sure how Staple sees them having the room without Parise retention. If I recall I think that was what made the deal not happen at the deadline. Maybe staple thinks they can sign barzal/martin for less. regardless, just wanted to map it out see how it would work.

I think the idea is to just add more scoring. none of the isles projects third liners could pot 20+ goals. Also Parise's PP numbers a better than a lot of the islanders (assuming Lee has a repeat of last year). Also Lou has his guys around the league that he loves.

I think I remember the retention being the deal-breaker at the deadline, but could be wrong. I'm low on Bellows too, but I'd love for him to get it together.

They absolutely should retain. Even if they "lose" up front in the deal, in this case they free up $6.5m per 2 years quicker than just keeping Parise. It's not that big of an ask.

This idea needs to die, nothing about it works for MN. It was a deal that fell though at the TDL; which was a pre-COVID world. This flat cap doesn't have the wiggle room to absorb bad contracts with term and be any type of competitive.
