Unrealistic Trade Idea

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 3, 2020
Published: Dec. 4, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With a flat cap being the most likely possibility for 2021-22, the Leafs may find difficulty keeping the big 4 while upgrading their team. The biggest need is a number 1 goaltender as they can't afford to retain the services of Andersen who will cost in the 6-7 million range. Getting a 2RD would improve the team as well.

Matthews and Tavares are untouchable. Marner is the one they'd like to move but no team has interest in him, so they'd have to move Nylander for an ELC player to clear cap space for those signings. It also leaves around 4 million to give Rielly a new deal the following season.

Thanks for the feedback. I think Lafreniere has a higher ceiling than Nylander (he put up better numbers in the Q than MacKinnon on a worse team). Put him on a line with Marner & Tavares, it’s not unreasonable to think he’ll get 80 points.

Laf as a rookie will probably be better than nylander. His ceiling is wayyyyy higher. Laf is in Matthew’s territory, not nylander

Lafreniere is the least likely of those three to be traded. He's the youngest, is (currently) the cheapest and could end up being a long term franchise player for them.

Nylander won't be a 1C. He's been tested in centre roles in Toronto and hasn't been convincing enough to move off of wing. No one is going to trade for Nylander to play centre, and especially not for their best prospect in a generation.

    Nylander isn’t a a 1C

Nylander has played C at every level before making the NHL. You may not remember but the Leafs tried Nylander at C in 2018/19 for a month & the 5 playoff games when Kadri was suspended. The results were excellent (he had a Corsi & Fenwick of over 55%). He generated a lot of scoring chances but his linemates Marleau & Brown were pretty bad. I feel if you put him with Panarin & Strome he would do excellent.

NYR would never, but ya I think this team could do it but like always it just depends if they can get their s**t together and play to their potential

Yes I agree. On paper the Leafs look fantastic but they always end up giving overrated performances.

Okay then rangers offer a package involving Nils Lundqivst +

    Definitely not Laf

Just the team itself without looking at the quality of the trade. I'd question whether this team is better than it was last year. Laf is great long term FOR SURE, but Brodie and JO while nice pieces aren't huge pieces. Both are overpaid for what they provide IMO. Also Grubauer isn't an improvement over Freddie. I actually think Freddie is the better goalie...just that he was WAY over worked last year. AND that's more a Keefe problem than Babs. Statistically Keefe relied on him more which is stupid crazy because that was a huge problem to begin with.

Thanks for the feedback. Brodie played heavy minutes on the top pair during his last few seasons on Calgary yet he still achieved excellent defensive results. I think he definitely improves Toronto’s defence compared to their previous situation.

Oleksiak is a 2nd pair defender but I feel he has the skillset to compliment Rielly. A smart, mobile defender who makes good decisions away from the puck. 4 million might be expensive but he ranked in the 99th percentile in expected goals against.

I think his ceiling is higher, but he probably isnt going to hit that within the next two years. Not trying to say its a bad deal for the Leafs, its not and I would imagine New York would like to keep Lafreniere over Nylander and pair him with Kakko for years to come, but the team itself would largely be the same.

I agree that Lafreniere has a much higher ceiling, but I don’t think he’ll be successful in NYR. They’re going to play him with Howden (who stinks) and the JJ-Bitteto pairing (2 garbage defencemen). He’s going to get caved in and it will destroy his confidence.

I think his ceiling is higher, but I dont anticipate him sitting at a ppg at the end of the season. The last guy to do that was McDavid. Matthews was close, but I dont see Laf being on a 40 goal pace.

Yeah I think the forward group would be at a similar level, but the the cap space of the trade, you get to add a solid defenceman in Oleksiak and a starting goalie. So overall, it’s a little bit better. Honestly, I just feel the Leafs are a good number 4 defender away from being legit.

No chance they put him with Howden. He will play with Chytil and Lemieux at worst

Maybe not a PPG, but he could be close, especially once NYR slide him up to the top 6

Nylander, great piece, abramov great piece. Exactly what type of pieces are you looking for? Lol.

Rangers aren’t trading lafreniere because teams aren’t offering more than this.

It’s not enough for Lafreniere. Doesn’t need more pieces, needs better pieces.

BTW, Lafreniere is a blue chip.

Uhhhh pretty sure leaf is blue chip already.

How can someone be a blue chip before they even play a full season? Given how NYR is going to use him he could easily be a bust.

I think it is mandatory to pick up the phone but he'd probably hang up the second he hears lafreniere

Not a good trade, trade aside. Not really a better team, less experienced and younger.
