The other problem here is the money he would lose to waive for Ottawa. He loses 1.346 million in taxes per year. Over 5 million over the remainder of his deal.

All you need is to pay a few extra thousand of $$ to your accountant and he'll lose nothing to the tax man, just ask Trump. It's simple for millionaires to avoid paying taxes if they are smart.

Tax difference is more than made up by additional sponsorships Canadian markets can provide. Think of Canadian tire or Tim hortons if he could be advertised in a Canadian clubs jersey huge deal coming his way.

Stamkos is well known enough in Canada, he could get sponsorships here even as a member of the Lightning. He doesn't need to play here (ie. Crosby & MacKinnon riding a zamboni in a Timmy's drive thru. Neither of those guys play in Canada).

I understand that but players are taking finical hits everywhere it’s unfortunate but that’s the business. In this case he’s moving to a Canadian club which in Canada there is more potential sponsorship deals he can easily recoup any losses due to tax differences.

Go look at the sponsorship deals of sens players in the past even when they were good compared to the rest of the league. You will see they pale in comparison. Not to mention they are not a good team that will generate little interest outside of their market.

The tax code is not nearly that complicated in Tampa or the US for that matter when it comes to athletes and entertainers. They do not have the same deductions that they can qualify for that the average wealthy businessman can

Exactly players are already going to be very unhappy with the amount of money they are going to have to give back. I cannot see any of them willingly giving up even more that they don't have to for the privilege of playing in a much less attractive market for a much worse team
