I think we overpay in all of these trades, but especially the Wilson trade. He's got toughness sure, but Robertson alone easily has the potential to be much better than him.

When did Ken Holland replace Steve Yzerman as Red Wings GM?

this just in, local oakville ontario boy, biggest free agent fish of the modern NHL era seeking cup with hometown leafs, waives NMC to go to rebuilding detroit 2 years into his 7 year deal

Signing JT was the biggest mistake the Leafs could ever do in their re-build.

No chance Colorado is giving up a high end 2C for that

As an outsider, JT is doing a good thing for the young guys. The leafs will win while he’s there.

^ This ^ Laughable trade considering they're one of the cup favorites.

the leafs had half the team walking in UFA that year, if they didn't make it up with JT, they likely suck for years on end. At that point, do they trade for muzzin, do brodie/thornton/simmonds/spezza etc. come home to toronto

it's an ugly chain reaction of unpleasant stuff if tavares doesn't sign here

dude literally hit the market, walked right up to dubas' door and was like "hey i wanna play for toronto, not really anyone else, I'll take less money lol". imagine the fallout if it dubas' team misses the playoffs for 2 years and it comes out that tavares wanted to take less to play in toronto lmao

Incorrect. I would say, in some order or another:

-Hiring Brian Burke to be GM.
-Trading 2 first round picks for Phil Kessel.
-Drafting any of the players that Brian Burke drafted.
-Hiring Randy Carlyle as coach.

After that, post-Burkie, I can't really think of any moves that were really that bad. Certainly could have saved a mil or so on Marner, and the Nylander hold-out could probably have been avoided. Unless someone had been able to see into the future, knowing that there'd be a small opportunity to get Pietrangelo (Though I prefer Tavares only being signed until he's 35 vs. Pietrangelo being signed into his late 30's.

They may not necessarily win the Cup (Because the chances of ANY team winning are always super low), but they're a much better team with him than without him, and have a much greater chance of being successful.

I personally don't even really think you can judge a teams success based on such a crapshoot in the playoffs though. It's not like pre-expansion when the best teams always won. Now it's basically which team gets hot at the right time.

Detroit passes, JT isn't waiving for DET and Yzerman isn't dealing those good picks.

The right side of Dallas blue line through their entire organization is as follows:

- Klingberg (top 5-8 RD in the entire league on an absolute steal of a contract)
- Heiskanen (technically his offhand side, but Miro does what Miro does at an elite level)
- Johns (NHL Caliber, but may never play again)

- Pysyk (6/7 defenseman)
- Fedun (6/7 defenseman)

- Honka (currently a fringe 3rd pair defenseman in the NHL)
- Dawson Barteaux (AHL level prospect)
- Cecconi (AHL level prospect)

There is no shot Dallas moves Klingberg, who is on arguably the best contract in the NHL, & rolls with one of Pysyk or Honka in their top-4 behind Heiskanen. Value-wise Klingberg for Nylander has arguably been about as close as I've seen in a 'Klingberg to Toronto' trade...but those trades didn't also involve one of Dallas' top prospects (Dellandrea) and a 1st Round Pick.

Dallas doesn't even let you finish the offer before they hang up the phone. The value isn't there, they don't have the RD depth, and they don't have the cap space to even entertain this kind of offer.

I completely agree. I think it's safe to say Tavares is a Leaf until he retires
