Sharks idea

Team: 2020-21 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 6, 2020
Published: Dec. 8, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Both Haula, and Duclair are due for better contracts but given the current state of the NHL I think they would sign deals to stay in the league. So I don't feel like the contracts would need to change much, though if I'm Haula I would want more term less money.

    COULD BE ANY TEAM

Doug Wilson realizes his team is to old to compete, his prospect pool is more of a puddle than a pool and he can't do a real rebuild as it could damage the fan base.
Solution trade away 2 players who should bring a decent return and sign Haula and Duclair as temporary patches.
Ideally both Hertl and Kane just return draft picks, and prospects, but in this economy probably need to take back some money with short term as well.

    2. 2022 1st round pick (CBJ)

Just a team I feel like could be a fit. Feel free to offer suggestions.

Hoped for return would be a 1st and a great prospect. Prospect like Marchenko or Tarasov would be nice.

Another team that I think would be a good fit. And a stab at a return but once again feel free to correct me and offer a better suggestion.

I mean, WPG could have Scheifele-Perfetti in couple years.

I don't see Columbus doing that. They haven't signed Dubois yet.

Wheeler is getting up there so could always move Hertl or Perfetti to wing.

Evander may return one of those assets. Definitely not both and most definitely not from Columbus. While it’s a good fit on paper they are now back in free agent market and before that they were squeezing teams who needed cap. So they are not in the right space to spend high end assets to add to the lines.

Wheeler may be getting up there in age but he still has 2-3 more years of being a top 6 forward imo. The guy is slowing down but he still was very good last year. The decline was noticeable but want really that bad. He just can’t play the 23+ mins he used to play to play at the same level. Anyways, if you have a top 6 group like the jets, no player should be playing over 22 mins

I don’t really see the need on the jets end.

Jets are solid wing....what they really might need is a centre
Columbus probably doesn't have the desire to have Kane and his 7m long term contract. Right now, teams can spend 7m on UFAs (short term) and keep their pick.

The Jackets would most likely decline.
They are really high on Marchenko, and their 1st round picks.
They gambled and lost in the Duchene acquisition.
For scoring This upcoming year, they will rely on the Domi addition and continued development of Texier, Bemstrom, Foudy and hopefully Grigorenko.

A bit too much for Hertl.

Maybe for the Jets but there is probably a team that would pay it imo.

I think it is a good strategy for teams dealing with the current cap constricted NHL with older players who are borderline past prime with large contracts...to try and unload even 1 contract and try to sign a short term value UFA for a year.
This buys time (For a year) until...
    1) The Covid thing resolves itself with vaccine/immunity and fans return to arenas And the economy gets better
    2) the cap increases
    3) Seattle expansion Draft helps to spread out/Resolve some salary cap capacity
    4) current bad contracts or aging players get one year closer to the end of their contract
