If They Kept Kadri

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 8, 2020
Published: Dec. 9, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
One thing I always wonder is why the Leafs didn't try Kadri at wing after signing Tavares.

If I recall correctly, in 2017/18, the Leafs played Marner down the middle and Kadri on the wing for 40 games. During that stretch Marner scored at a 90 point pace and Kadri scored at a 40 goal pace. If they put him on LW with Tavares and Marner in 2018/19, I think he would've hit career highs again rather than slumping as the 3C which he never seemed to fit.

If the Leafs kept Kadri, I feel they would've resigned Jake Gardiner because they still needed a top 4 defenceman as a result of not getting Barrie. Prioritizing those 2 guys would've left a lack of cap space to lock Marner long term, so he would've had to take a bridge deal worth 8-9 million.

Do you guys think the Leafs should've tried Kadri on the wing?

i am very confused

gardiner was a disaster, had back problems, multiple surgeries, ultimately ended up seriously struggling in carolina and is now a borderline cap dump, we should not have kept him ever

I would rather have marner for 6 years at 10.893 than 8m for 2 years

So Toronto keeps Kadri, Marner plays better, and marner gets 2.5 less?

You do not recall correctly. Marner has never had an extended stretch at C in the NHL.

Babcock wanted Kadri as his matchup C. So he was never switching to the W.

Gardiner's time as a Leaf was done before the Kadri trade, the writing was on the wall.

no, they would not have signed Jake Gardiner. if they were going to do that they would have done it anyway. His back was shot and they weren't going to chance it and hey look they were right.

But to answer your question I always wanted Kadri on the wing. Also I always wanted Gardiner on the 4th line as a wing if we insisted on playing him.

I think you guys are being too harsh on Gardiner. Look at his stats from 2016-2019. He ranked near the top of the league in offence generated & during his last 2 seasons here was an above average defender. Though the sample size isn’t large, he did great alongside Rielly.

Maybe I recalled wrong, but from what I saw, Kadri would take the face offs and they would switch positions during open play. Kadri engaged in the dirty area battles whereas Marner provided support and carried the puck from the middle of the ice.

I think if the Leafs made keeping Kadri and Gardiner the priority over Marner, he wouldn’t have gotten as much money as he did.

Whoever has responsibility for the opposing C in the defensive zone is the C. They could have flipped around in transition or the o-zone a bit, it doesn't mean Marner was the C.

Kadri was never hanging around the right side in Dzone chipping pucks out.

They obviously would not have prioritized Gardiner over Marner. Do you not remember the end of that season? Everyone knew (media, fans, etc.) that Gardiner was gone.

Aging Gardiner was not a good fit anymore for the $$ he was going to make.

Just like JVR and Bozak were not staying even if we didn't sign Tavares considering they were playing lowest min of their career in a sheltered role.

Yeah Marner was the C in the offensive zone.

I mean, considering he only got 4 Million, I don’t think it’s all that bad. His overall on ice impacts for Toronto were pretty good even though he played with the anchor Zaitsev.

He was a good player, but obviously didn't make sense to commit to him long term.

He only ended up getting 4, but it was projected throughout that season that he was to make quite a bit more than that. Either way, he was vilified in Toronto by fans and media and probably didn’t want to stay regardless.

That's true. I just think it would've been interesting to see what Gardiner could do away from Zaitsev.

I had to reduce it to fit in both Kadri and Gardiner. It's a hindsight team, nothing serious.
