this is a good post because not only is Brodie nothing like Jake Gardiner, but Jake Gardiner was really really really good for most of his career as a leaf and only people who dont watch the games thought he was bad

ah yes, give aways. a wonderful stat that is hilariously poorly tracked and counts things like un-retrieved dump ins the same as it does passes to the slot to the wrong team.
and lets take a look at the give-aways leaders from last season, Hronek, Draisaitl, Huberdeau, Pastrnak, Carlson, Ekblad, Barzak, Petry. Gross! Who wants those guys?

But...Brodie is a defensive dman...and is good at it...whereas Gardiner was a (very good) offensive d-man who was just put into the wrong situations on a regular basis, due to the lack of defensive depth on the Leafs.

I'd assume that portion of Leaf fans that always need to have a whipping boy will continue to harp about how Marner is overpaid, Nylander is a bum, and how they should have never signed Tavares.

I'm excited for that same crew, the ones who were wildly excited to get the greatest leader to never win a Stanley Cup (Joe Thornton), and the fastest slow player in the league (Simmonds), will quickly turn on them as well.

For those of you who aren't like that-Cheers.

@TheLeafsSeason You have to be one of the biggest Leafs haters on this site tears of joy

As a non-Leafs fan, I don't get why you would put yourself through the torture of being a Leafs fan if you can't handle any of the moves that they make. It's just a shirt with a logo on it...lots of other teams that you could put your support behind.

once again, clearly not a leafs fan, but took the time to make a troll leaf fan account and make troll posts about the leafs, can you say rent free?

Oh...Brodie can do some really bad... gardiner-esque giveaways. But the last 2 years he has really cleaned up his game. Last year was my favourite Brodie season by far. If we get that Brodie, leafs fans will be happy. If we don’t... we’ll we still have Brodie the puck mover who can rock a transition game which fits the leafs style well but who is far better than Barrie in his own end. Bit better than gardiner in that respect too.

well more people should have watched the games.
Jake Gardiner was a legit first pairing defender for 90% of his leafs tenure and the leafs best defender for pretty much that entire stretch. People remember like 3 give aways and pretend that's his entire career despite guys like Rielly, et all making similar mistakes all the time and not getting branded for it.

Excluding last year when Brodie's defensive game was far and above the previous few, they are very similar players

Agree with everything but Brodie being dfd. I think you meant better than a gardiner or Barrie. Which he is. Great in transition and okay offensively and okay defensively.

Everything else is pretty spot on. Leafs nation is such a toxic community. Hard to tell who is just jaded and which are just fans of other teams with troll accounts.

We've disagreed on a number of things here, but I also think that Gardiner is (Or at least was) good. I think we should all be able to agree that he was misused a number of times by Babcock and Carlyle.

Most of the year before too. First 1/3 of that season was a little loose. If Brodie can play his game and lose the brain farts he will be great in Toronto. If not he will still be okay.

I think he's exactly what the Leafs need, and am disappointed that my Ducks didn't get him.

For sure, he was prone to the brain farts. Being a bit careless with the puck at times but he had a ton of skill.

Look up both sets of stats from 17-18... even 18-19 would be pretty close.

like, they aren't even really similar players. Gardiner is a powerplay quarterback, Brodie is a 5v5 competant 2 way defender

A lot of leafs fans are way too polar on Brodie. Simply put, he is the clear best full time D partner Rielly has ever had (will have soon at least). However he is not perfect, there will be times where he messes up but thats because he plays a very high risk style game.
